Texas Monthly Channels the LA Times

In my continuing effort to bring you all Texas news, all the time: The Austin American-Statesman reports Texas Monthly magazine has reduced its workforce by 4.5% and cut the salaries of the remaining employees.

The commenters are debating what caused the cuts: The out-of-state management, claims that the editors harbor a liberal bias, too many celebrity-focused articles, or the general downturn in print.

That sounds familiar.

  1. Well, I don’t subscribe, so that’s gotta hurt.

  2. And Gannett’s laying off 1,000. As for celebrity news, you can’t kill it with a stick. TV does it and at some point print thought it would be a good idea too. Not.

One paper that’s nailing it day after day is the South Bay’s Daily Breeze… all local stories with a connection to community. The range of info is great, including soft interviews w/ local business entrepreneurs. And they seem to frequently have compelling headlines that make you want to stop and read.

It’s too bad about this downsizing in Austin; that should be an awesome town for local stories and print exposure. No need to go Hollywood there… in fact, that’s a step down for Austin!

  3. It’s not much of a mystery. Few folks are so dumb as to pay for liberal clap-trap when it’s free on TV.

  4. I’ve always enjoyed the Texas Monthly magazine. I’m sorry to hear that it’s having troubles.

As for liberal bias, well, it never struck me as too bad, and politics is hardly the main focus of the magazine in any case.

The out-of-state management, though: that’s just embarrassing.

  5. I never subscribed to Texas Monthly, so I’d only buy it if there was something on the cover that caught my eye and I had time to kill at an airport or somewhere. And I can honestly say that it’s been years since the last time a cover article caught my eye. But it never did strike me as particularly liberal. It just seemed in line with the slightly leftist politics of the Dallas Morning News, and way to the right of the Austin American Pravda.

  6. More significantly, Cox Enterprises recently announced that they were putting the Statesman up for sale, along with 27 other daily newspapers they own.

  7. Sorry for the OT, but here’s a refreshing example of a totally unbiased story on immigration by the AP. This is a masterpiece of solid, unbiased journalism. You never get the sense the reporter is at any point injecting her personal opinions in the story, or confusing issues to gloss over harsh realities that would interfere with a predetermined storyline.

No wonder the MSM, and especially the AP, are so revered.

  8. Bradley,

It’s stories like the one you link that prompted Patterico to start the Deport the Criminals First series.
