“It’s A Fool That Looks For Logic In The Chambers Of The Human Heart.”

This:

Pete: You miserable little snake! You stole from my kin!
Ulysses Everett McGill: Who was fixin’ to betray us.
Pete: You didn’t know that at the time.
Ulysses Everett McGill: So I borrowed it until I did know.
Pete: That don’t make no sense!

is what I thought of when I read this:

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs explains the cancellation of a stop at a U.S. military base in Germany during a leg of the trip paid for (unlike the Iraq and Afghanistan visits) by his campaign:

“During his trip as part of the CODEL to Afghanistan and Iraq, Senator Obama visited the combat support hospital in the Green Zone in Baghdad and had a number of other visits with the troops.  For the second part of his trip, the senator wanted to visit the men and women at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to express his gratitude for their service and sacrifice. The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

Obama passed on a visit to wounded soldiers and marines at US military bases in Germany, and substituted in a workout at the Ritz Carlton in Berlin, and a little sightseeing around Berlin.  After all, he’d never been there before.

Obama noted that in a break from his whirlwind schedule, “we’ve got some down time tonight. What are you guys gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? …I’ve never been to Berlin, so…I would love to tour around a little bit.”

  1. Why would visting American soldiers overseas ever be “Inappropriate” for a member of the United States Senate? Pumping up a domestic election by pandering to foreign nations overseas is “appropriate”, but visiting our boys is unseemly? C’mon Americans! Stand up against these rats!

  2. It’s a “CODEL” but it’s also a trip funded by the campaign? Sheesh. Talk about trying to have it both ways. “I’m just here as a citizen, not a candidate for president.” Well, if he’s in Germany to give a massive speech in Berlin just as a citizen, not a candidate, why is it inappropriate to make a trip, as a citizen, to visit the injured soldiers?

You know, he could do what President Bush generally does… goes and visits injured soldiers without inviting all the reporters to tag along and take pictures. Then, he’d be paying respect to the soldiers AND not using them as campaign props. Guess the thought of doing anything without publicity is too foreign to Sen. Obama and his staffers.

  3. just as well……. it’s safe to say that a good portion of the troops would just as soon *not* meet him, not to mention all the extra effort that units take when getting a “special” visitor.

  4. Perhaps he’ll be shamed into sneaking over there now.

  5. How ironic. I heard on the radio just this morning a clip from Obama speaking with reporters. When asked his favorite part about this trip, his reply was, “visiting our service men and women.”

Does he not realize that private citizens regularly visit wounded soldiers, both here and abroad? Shouldn’t someone inform him that this is a very, very good thing to do?

When asked his favorite part about this trip, his reply was

Dana, the damage of course is that this fool presumptive-whatever is trying to buy the world through soundbites. I’m shocked at a number of blogs with posts from people who really don’t follow the news… and I mean in a big way. That ignorant vote is what we have to hope will also be too lazy to get to the voting booth. Have them think O! is a shoo-in.. just stay home and check their my spaces or whatever.

  7. OTH, he also said he’s going to change the world. He can start on my garage. It’s a mess.

    Vermont Neighbor (31ccb6)

  8. Duh. It would be “inappropriate” because he’d probably get “booed” and that would make it really bad for his “campaign.”

  9. Hopiness and changiness you can believe in. If you doubt it, just watch how quickly he changes his positions.

    JD (75f5c3)

  10. He could instantly turn the tables on us all, and sneak away from the press for the visit (come on, we ALL loved it when he dumped them for his private meet w/Hillary!). Then, a day or two later, an “unnamed source close to the campaign” could leak that he did visit some servicemen and women. BAM! Instant hero.:-)

  11. That’s too bad, Obama should of gone to the military based. The soldiers there I’m sure would of cheered given that they have to respect a Senator and possible future Command In Chief.

    Oiram (983921)

  12. Yes, TimesDisliker, that’s what I meant by saying he might be shamed into going now.

    MayBee (201644)

  13. Oh, he will go, media in tow.

    JD (75f5c3)

  14. The soldiers there I’m sure would of cheered given that they have to respect a Senator and possible future Command In Chief.

Applauded politely, perhaps. (Think “golf clap”.)

  15. LOL

When Democrats point out that the Military is actually applauding and cheering Obama. You guys say “Well of course, what do you expect them to do? It’s out of respect, etc. etc.”

But when he chooses not to go to base, I’m sure your all thinking “See, See, he is afraid of being booed!!

You guys just haven’t found your Swift Boat yet.

Keep nit picking or else make something up again by November. It’s your only hope.

    Oiram (983921)

  16. “…the damage of course is that this fool presumptive-whatever is trying to buy the world through soundbites.”

Vermont Neighbor, the saddest part is that it will work! The masses don’t want to do the hard work of becoming informed, they just want to be titillated. Thrill me, chill me and I’ll vote for you !

(just ask Chris Matthews about that leg thing…)

O knows his audience very well.

    Dana (b4a26c)

  17. When Democrats point out that the Military is actually applauding and cheering Obama.

When Democrats CLAIM that the military is applauding and cheering, I will always ask for evidence of anything other than mere politeness to a Federal Official that ranks lower on the TOE than a fourth Lieutenant.

They cheered Bill O’Reilly. I’ve seen the tape. I want to see evidence that they cheered Obama.

Or for you to retract your inaccurate comment. (You know we can’t possibly refer to any “misstatement” that you refuse to correct or retract as “the truth”, and there is only one other word to call it.

    Drumwaster (5ccf59)

  18. I don’t think he’d be booed.

That’s why I think this is the stupidest fooking thing I’ve ever seen.

The absolutely correct thing to have done would have been to go quietly, without a press entourage. I wouldn’t have to be a secret that he went, just no cameras or reporters in sight while he was there.

Not going — and rationalizing it by saying his campaign is paying for this part of his trip — is an excuse no one will understand.

  19. So it is just fine with the disloyal left when troops are polled on what candidate they would vote for POTUS and the result is 59- McCain, 3 for Urkel the turdmeister and 2 for Hillary? Then when it shows up on network tube later, “journalist” Martha only shows the five not voting for McCain. All Hail “Ich bin ein Beginner”

  21. Obambi reminds me of another candidate with a similar record of back room deals and conniving to get elected.

Read Robert Caro’s Path to Power and Means of Ascent. You’ll see a lot of similarities. Pay particular attention to the campaign against Coke Stevenson with dead people voting.

  22. I listened to long stretches of both JFK’s Berlin speech and Reagan’s in the car going to work today. I shed a few tears. What men they were! Will America ever see such courage and passion again in a president?

Obama in Berlin is a shallow wanker, a rich kid with a shiny new toy, in comparison.

    Patricia (f56a97)

  23. Upon reading many of the blogs posted here, I must clarify something.
Most Americans agree with the lofty words and visions for world peace that Obama so eloquently pontificates in his speeches … It’s Obama we don’t trust. those of you who hypnotically fawn over Obama take everything he says as gospel. But, you don’t even know the man. You assume that because his words are worthy, he is trustworthy. People they are just words! Obama, the man who is speaking those words has a horrible track record. He did nothing as a senator. He spent the last 20 years accepting an anti-American racist as his mentor. His associations have been with extremely unsavory people. However, you Obamabots keep trying to characterize the rest of us as disagreeing with what Obama says … when it’s Obama himself we don’t trust … nor should you!

    Lee (6261e4)

  24. It’s a “CODEL” but it’s also a trip funded by the campaign?

Because, of course, no public financing is involved…

    Wanna buy this watch? 😉

  25. You rightwing crazy people really make me laugh lol,it seems like obama can’t win don’t care what he does y’all will try to find some way to bash him (don’t care how stupid it sounds).if obama did go see the troops y’all would still be saying something stupid(it was for political gain/etc),that’s when you know obama’s doing something right by making mccain look so small this week lol.getting all the media coverage/etc and y’all rightwing nuts can’t stand that lol.
