Honolulu’s “Progressive” Weekly Newspaper Makes An Interesting Choice for its Political Cartoon in its June 25-July 1 Edition

The Honolulu Weekly is about as pro-Obama as a publication can get without being funding by the campaign itself — then again, with all that campaign cash, maybe they are funded.

The HW is one of those urban “progressive” weekly papers that you can grab for free around town, and is useful for lining the birdcage at home.

But this week’s edition makes quite an interesting choice for the political cartoon that runs on it’s “Letters to the Editor” page.

Here’s a link to the cartoon in the current issue of the most “progressive” newspaper in general circulation in the most pro-Obama city in the most pro-Obama state in the United States.

With friends like these….

    Animal abuse.

  3. And David Letterman tells Obama jokes at the same time that he barely disguises his pro-Obama bias.

    THAT left a mark…

  6. . . . the most pro-Obama city in the most pro-Obama state in the United States.

Cambridge, Massachusetts disputes your characterization, and Santa Monica, California would like in on the action too. Not to mention Berkeley and San Francisco.

  7. Does Obama really have his name tattooed across his groin?

  8. The cartoonist showed no mercy with those ears. I wonder if Obama can hear the sun when it comes up in the morning.

  9. This must be one of those racist right-wing attacks Obama was warning about.

  10. JVW — on second thought, the large military presence in this state — especially the Navy and Marines — probably make McCain more competitive here than on many other cities.

But, the depth of the Koolaid pond here is amazing.

    Doubtful…

Hawaii runs VERY blue… Most of those military folks vote in their home state…

  14. Remember the stories at the end of the 2004 election where Hawaii was allegedly in play? The Bush campaign dispatched V.P. Cheney over there to appear at a last minute rally. Turns out Kerry won 54%-45%, and a total of about 37,000 votes. Don’t expect McCain could do any better, even with his Navy background.

  15. well, *that’s* a harsh toke…..

    /but funny as hell. %-)

  16. JVW–

54-45 is close enough to think about chaning, if not at the last minute. After all, some newspapers would call a spread like that “slight.”

    Kevin Murphy (0b2493)

  17. By the way, did anyone notice the OTHER decision handed down today, striking down the election law that removed caps on fundraising if a competitor self-financed?

The cartoonist showed no mercy with those ears. I wonder if Obama can hear the sun when it comes up in the morning.

    — No, but he can hear the Son when he gets up in the morning, and then he looks in the mirror and sees the Son . . . and then he walks on water, but not off Waikiki Beach. Remember when he said he had been to 57 states but Hawaii, where he was born, was not among them?

BTW, how do you think they feel in our 50th state, knowing that he took his vacation in the Virgin Islands and gave them a pass — again?

  20. Meanwhile, I’m busy link-whoring for my friend’s blog. (Let me know if that’s bad form.) Here’s an excerpt of a piece on Obama, set to the tune of Modern Major-General:

You have read my mythic histories, how Barry became Barack.
Who’s sayin’ Obama cannot win? This election is a lock!
I need to buy a longer bus cuz there’s no more room below it.
That’s where past and present friends go cuz I don’t intend to blow it.
Samantha Powers and Jim Johnson and ole Jeremiah Wright
Goolsby and my own Grandma (did I ever tell you she is white?).
My flag-trampling friend Bill Ayers, yes, the man I barely even know,
Has an “explosive” personality, so he’ll be last to go.

His “explosive” personality, ensures he’ll be last to go!
It’s just like it was in the 60’s: he’s always the last to go!
If your Daddy always paid your bills, then you would be last to go!

In Illinois or D.C., I’ve never written legislation.
Hope and change! And… change and hope! are all I need to run this nation.
I said, in matters vegetable (I really dig arugul…)
Uh… Hey! Why shouldn’t I be your modern Candidate General?

He said, in matters vegetable (He wants some more arugul…).
Uh… Hey! Why shouldn’t He be our modern Candidate General?

  22. As tasteless as that cartoon is, it makes its point. If it shakes some people out of their Obamaniac hypnosis, I say it’s about time.

  23. #17 – holy moley, based on what happened with their previous Mcain-Finegold decision, this is an upset victory for the real Free Speech meant in the 1st Amendment. So both 1st and 2nd Amendment won!!!

btw: reads like Justice Alito is preparing for someone to ask that Mcain-Finegold be gutted.

  24. Hee hee hee. The cartoonist took a little extra dig- note the cigarette butt at the bottom of the page.

  25. Q: Where is that typical white person’s gun & Bible?

A: O ripped it out of twp’s hands, just like he’s going to do your’s if elected. He’s told you government can still regulate guns. And O don’t need no stinkin’ Bible. He IS the word. Word.

  26. Hey, fat tony. Nice! Looks like the start of a Broadway musical… Maybe O!. Produced by Oprah Winfrey of course.

Thank you. It’s part of a much longer piece, but I promise you it is worth your time to read the whole thing.
