If he did go, we (many, not all) on the political right (including me) would be blasting him for his showmanship and for undermining Bush’s policies.
It’d set a bad precedent as well (Logan Act, et cetera).
Recall that Nixon was accused of undermining LBJ and Humphrey by secretly telling the South Vietnamese government not to accept any peace overtures that were “pushed” on them by the Administration. That if they held out, they would receive more support from a Nixon White House.
Anyway, this is a weak stick to hit Obama with.
