  1. If West Virginians are such stupid, bitter, racist, uneducated, trailer trash hicks, and that’s why they voted for Sen. Clinton, how come Sen. McCain beat Gov. Huckabee so handily?

  2. 19% reporting:

    63% Clinton
    30% Obama

  3. It’s a rough count but it looks like 14 counties have not yet reported any votes; 40+ have. Of those 40+ reporting counties, the map shows Clinton winning each one by a minimum of 25% and in most counties by 30-50%. In some she leads by 60-75%.

  4. More interesting: the Democrat won the special election runoff in MS-1, a district with a 10% republican registration advantage which broke 62-37 for Bush in 2004.

  5. It’s only more interesting if you believe the GOP has a chance in the 2008 Congressional election.

  6. It just occurred to me. Why don’t CNN’s percentages add to 100%? Hillary is shown at 67% and Obama at 26%. That’s only 93% of the vote - where’s the other 7%?

When I calculate the numbers: 199,589/278,120 = 71%, not 67% which is shown for Hillary.

  7. Former Sen. Edwards is still on the ballot.

  8. So there were substantially more Democratic voters in this primary than in 2004’s primary. Is this more Operation Chaos?

  9. More interesting: the Democrat won the special election runoff in MS-1, a district with a 10% republican registration advantage which broke 62-37 for Bush in 2004.

A pro-life, pro-gun Democrat who ran away from Barack Obama, it should be noted. This obviously doesn’t bode well for congressional Republicans, but I don’t think it is particularly promising for Obama’s prospects among moderate and conservative Democrats either.

    Comment by JVW — 5/13/2008 @ 9:01 pm

  10. JVW–Democrats had more incentive to vote today, so the Congressional vote may have turned out differently if there was no contested Democratic primary.

  11. MSNBC’s lead story is Clinton Wins West Virginia. The next story details racism directed at Obama volunteers. That’s not very subtle.

    Comment by DRJ — 5/13/2008 @ 9:17 pm

  12. Kishnevi, the Presidential primary for Mississippi was back in March; why did Democrats in particular have more incentive to get out and vote today?

    Comment by JVW — 5/13/2008 @ 9:31 pm

  13. It kind of tells the entire story to look at the delegate breakdown — Obama loses by 3-1 and still gets a third of th delegates. It’s like one of those Special Olympics contests where everyone wins.

If the Dems did winner-take-all this would have been decided by now.

    Comment by Kevin Murphy — 5/14/2008 @ 1:11 am

  14. 67 percent of the voters in WV are racist, no surprise since that is the home of Dem. Sen. Byrd (Grand Kleagle - WV). 27 percent of the voters were misogynistic sexists.

  15. All hillary needs to do to secure the nomination is call up Edwards and say “You ever thought about being AG?”.

He’d give her his pledged, and she’d be sitting better off…

    Comment by Scott Jacobs — 5/14/2008 @ 9:17 am

  16. “That’s not very subtle.”

Neither is the racism. Oftentimes when the GOP and racism are brought up, people bring up Robert Byrd. So what does that say about WV?

  17. Kevin M at #13 — LOL

A more appropriate analogy would be Little League T-ball — they don’t keep score in Dem primaries, and everyone gets a trophy for participating.

  18. WLS - I just encountered the no keeping score thing for the first time. Having played D1 basketball, I am as competitive as the next. My 6 yr old was playing a soccer game against a team with Pele, Beckham, and Ronaldo on it. Their coach yelled out the score every time they scored - 18-1, 19-1, 20-1. I had a quiet conversation with the coach after the game, truly, but lack of volume and smiling while you say something did not keep the League Director from calling ;-) I gave her a kind earful too.

There’s losing and there’s getting wiped out. The difference matters.
