Liveblogging the Mike Peters Solo Show

Filed under: Music — Patterico @ 8:18 pm

I’m here at the Crash Mansion in L.A., waiting for Mike Peters of the Alarm to take the stage. I’m wearing my threadbare T-shirt from the Change tour, circa 1989. The room is packed with at least 16 expectant fans.

I’ll never understand why this guy isn’t more famous than Bono. That’s life for you.

UPDATE: Make that 23 fans!

UPDATE x2: There must be around 38 fans here now. It’s intermission.

Reminds me of when I saw one of the all-time great bands, Wasted Tape, in L.A. with about six other people.

UPDATE x3: What a great show. The man plays to 40 people with the same energy and intensity as if he were playing to 40,000.

He’s always done that.

  1. I’m eating chocolate chip cookies in my jeans and T-shirt, and I’ll never understand why you let me guest post at your blog. That’s life for you.

  2. Because he knows you’re more conscientious and responsible than he is. Just who exactly is Mike Peters?

    Bingo.

P.S. He was the lead singer for a band called “The Alarm.”

  5. You don’t know The Alarm? Oh well.

    Patterico – don’t forget about 7 Grand – 515 W. 7th -2nd Floor – great Whiskey Bar. I highly recommend.

Now if you can just figure how out how I can persuade her to stay around indefinitely . . .

  8. I don’t know The Alarm but I think this link is to a 2000 Mike Peters’ interview in which he mentions that one of the original members, Twist, is now a public defense investigator in San Francisco.

    Small world.

Indeed. I was just discussing that odd fact with another fan about an hour ago.

  10. Just give her the keys. Patterico’s is not an addiction you can be arrested for (yet) but it is an addiction for a fact.

  11. She has the keys. I just don’t want her to give them back.

  12. mostly because you didn’t let the rest of us Alarm & whisky fans know about this until long after we’d spent the afternoon sucking down beers and doing yard w*rk….. not to mention dinner.

    /own goal.

  13. I have never heard of any of these bands…

Man you people are old. Except for DRJ. She can’t be over 25…

  14. I have 15 songs on my iPod by a guy who only draws 40 people in concert? Man, I AM old!

  15. — An example of Mike Peters songwriting for the young’ins in the group:

    SOLD ME DOWN THE RIVER
    ——————————————

There’s a fire beneath my skin
There’s a fever that makes me ill
Got a love, a love that kills
I’ve got twenty four hours to live

    Come back
I’m begging you please, come back
Come back, I’m down on my knees
Come back, I’m begging you please

    I don’t know why, I don’t understand
How you sold me down the river
    I don’t know why, I don’t understand
How you sold me down the river
    Sold me down the river

There’s a rose across my chest
Got your name written on it
Love’s the drug that I live by
Give me a shot before I die

    Come back
I’m begging you please, come back
Come back, I’m down on my knees
Come back, I’m begging you please

    I don’t know why, I don’t understand
How you sold me down the river
    I don’t know why, I don’t understand
How you sold me down the river
    Sold me down the river

  16. Whoa…synchronicity, dude! Just yesterday, I found “The Chant” on YouTube. I hadn’t heard it in years.

Why isn’t he as famous as Bono?

Maybe because he doesn’t want to be.

I have met many extraordinarily talented people who no longer have the goal of international fame and the money that comes with it. I never assume people who are no longer stars are eating their hearts out about not being the center of attention everywhere they go.

Chances are, Mike Peters could walk through the airport or have a cup of coffee with a friend without being harassed by stalking fans or paparazzi waiting for an opportunity to catch in a nose pick. Bono can’t do that.
