  2. i hate tweakers! i had one come up here last year on the pretext of getting gasoline for his almost-empty tank, but really to case a country joint. on his way out, he stole a large steel screwhook that had been most firmly attached to a fencepost at the foot of my driveway.

  3. That’s brilliant. Thank you. Good for that sheriff’s department. How to get the video an enormous publicity?

  5. No one ever talks about the good side of meth and other hard drugs:

    1. Concern over Social Security failure unnecessary.

    2. Heroin addicts are much less likely to get cancer over their lifetimes than non-addicts.

    3. If you hang around crankster chicks, it will be much easier to get lucky than it will hanging out with accountant chicks.

    4. Many people never know about the CIA agents hiding in the trees outside my window. But I do.

    5. Meth lab clears out bad pet smells.

    6. Hanging around dopers will give you many funny stories. (He was on fire! Then the car ran him over!)

    7. Low expectations in life mean no disappointment.

    8. Child support orders mean nothing if you have no attachable income.

    9. (PCP) You can kick that cop’s ass. Yeah, he feels it now, but you won’t feel anything for at least a day.

    10. There’s always more where that came from.

So, I’m tired of all the anti-meth propaganda. Let’s give meth, heroin, PCP, and coke a fair shake.

  6. #5 JRM: Good list!

Just to keep things straight, the video is not the work of the Multnomah County Sherriff’s Department, who collaborated with the (Portland) Oregonian Publishing Co. to produce the posters.

The video was uploaded to YouTube by kedohmen, but that is as much as I know of its provenance.

  7. JRM,

    That’s a priceless list.

  8. Great example of artificially large demand for an inferior product, driven upward by government interference on both the demand and supply sides of the larger market.

Kinda like the way our country consumes more corn syrup than cane sugar — something that would never happen in a free market. It’s idiotic, but it benefits certain people with influence, so here we are.

Sure, opium and cocaine addiction sucks. But are we really happier with meth addicts? And if we succeed in eradicating meth (by, among other things, getting rid of all effective over-the-counter cold medicine) what’s next? “Faces of Gasoline Fumes Inhalation”?

    Not exactly, no.

Addiction is a disease that comes about because of a neurotransmitter deficiency in the neural pathways between the Nucleus Accumbens and the Ventral Tegmental Area.

However, everybody’s brain chemistry is different: hence, there are differences even among addicts, whose “drug of choice” varies from individual to individual. Hence the demand for meth, its not driven by market forces in the classical economic sense described by Adam Smith~but rather a subset of the population beset with that particular addiction.

Addiction is a chronic, progressive disease process, so use of an addictive psychoactive other than the addict’s “drug of choice” will continue to exacerbate the problem, but there is never an adequate substitution (from the addiction’s point of view) for the drug of choice.
