BREAKING!!! Britney in Minor Fender Bender!!!!

Not that long ago, the Los Angeles assistant bureau chief for the Associated Press told his troops: “Now and for the foreseeable future, virtually everything involving Britney is a big deal.”

He wasn’t kidding. From the AP today: Spears in minor accident on Ventura Freeway.

Britney Spears’ motoring misfortunes continue.

The pop star was involved in a minor traffic accident late Saturday, but no one was injured and no vehicles were damaged, authorities said.

Stop the presses, baby!

The L.A. Times is not immune to this silliness. In fact, I found the bombshell story about the Britney accident on the main page for the Los Angeles Times web site today. I wonder how many stories about murders of Compton teenagers will have to be squeezed out of the print edition to make the necessary room for the Britney fender-bender story. [UPDATE: Or, as commenter Sam points out, “non fender-bender story” — since no fender was bent.]

  5. And the newspaper pooh-bahs and the reporters…er sorry, “journalists”, blame everyone and everything but themselves for the utter financial meltdown of their business. Circulation, advertising lineage, sales, earnings…all flushed down the toilet. They are increasingly irrelevant while they bask in their own importance and whine about the business hole that they’ve dug for themselves. Case in point, McClatchy common stock was approx $60 a share in Oct O6, it’s barely above 10 bucks now.

  6. Newsday proves my point…The Britney story is one of the top featured headlines at the top of their main web page! Just because the AP editors have mush for brains doesn’t mean the local editors have to follow them but, hey, if the AP runs it, it must be true and newsworthy…right?
