A Clash in LA Over Illegal Immigration

The family of Jamiel Shaw Jr., the Los Angeles High football star who was shot last month, has asked the LA City Council to do more to identify and deport criminal aliens. Jamiel’s alleged killer is an illegal immigrant who had been released from jail:

“The attack on the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Order 40 — which limits when officers can ask about the citizenship status of suspects — has come largely but not exclusively from anti-illegal-immigration forces.

But now the order has a new and potentially potent foe: the family of Jamiel Shaw Jr., the Los Angeles High football star who was killed last month. Police have charged a gang member who was in the country illegally with Shaw’s slaying.

Jamiel Shaw Sr. and his wife, Anita, a U.S. Army sergeant who has been serving in Iraq, appeared before the City Council on Tuesday arguing for changes to the 30-year-old Los Angeles Police Department policy as it pertains to gang members suspected of being illegal immigrants.

Shaw Sr. proposed that LAPD policy be changed so officers would routinely check the immigration status of known gang members who are crime suspects — which he said would make it easier to immediately deport them.

“If you’re a gang member who is suspected of committing a crime, why can’t they check a database at the police station to see if you’re here illegally? Why can’t they check a database at the jail?” Shaw asked.”

Why can’t they, indeed?

  1. Viva La Raza! That’s why. This is a scary time for Gigolorosa, Molina, Cardenas, etc. Will they do the right thing, or the Raza thing? If the gangs were Irish or Italian, would they get the same deference? The criminal gang behavior wasn’t ok 100 years ago in NY, and it still isn’t ok now.

My heart really goes out to the Shaws, who played by the rules and had all their dreams and achievements snuffed out in the name of political correctness.

  2. The LA City Council and LA Police Commission are absolutely pathetic. Special order #40 needs to be abolished. Bratton is no better. They are more concerned with political correctness than dealing with crime issues. The bottom line is they lack the courage to do the right thing.

  3. Another question:
Why can’t they do the job they have sworn to do: to protect and serve the citizens of Los Angeles, California, and the United States; and to uphold the Constitution of those United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic?

  4. The LA Police Commission & City Council would never permit LAPD to do that.

  5. LA Weekly has a good story on this. Apparently the Council couldn’t change the subject fast enough when the Shaws appeared. There were horrendous billboards to promote!

  6. Then, what this City needs is a massive, all incompassing, re-call election.
Since no-one wants to stand up, they should all be thrown out (and, a few of them should probably be thrown in jail for mis/mal/whatever-feasance).
From the Mayor to the Police Commission, and every elected official in between!

  7. And, as for the Chief of Police:
He should be given a bus-ticket to the Eastern-Seaboard city of his choice, and told to not even think of looking back!
And then, I’d call that city and warn them he’s coming.

  8. I’m not familiar with LA politics but it seems to me that it’s prone to race/gender identity politics. Despite Mr. Shaw’s noble attempt to avoid it, I think this pits two racial groups against each other – Hispanics and blacks – with the LA City Council/LAPD in the middle. If that’s true, who will the public institutions side with?

  9. Another Drew: asking a police officer to uphold the Constitution is like asking Gloria Alred to like men. Think asset forfeiture, think SWAT raids with baloney warrants or NO warrants…

  10. Yeh, I know I’m asking a lot, but we pay them a lot, and it’s damn time they started to PROPERLY earn it!

    As for identity politics:
We are already in the middle of a race war here.
The Hispanic gangs set out over 10 years ago to ethnically-cleanse areas of the city of Blacks, and whomever else they felt like it.
This is one of the hits on Bratton, he refuses to acknowledge the race-war that is going on on the streets of his City.
Streets he and his men are supposed to patrol to prevent crime; or at least arrest, charge, and provide sufficient evidence to convict the perps of that crime.

If it wasn’t for the Arabic invention (discovery) of the value of zero, we would have no way to score our politicians that lead this city.

  11. I want to add that I feel very sorry for the Shaws, and I admire them because they are trying to make something good come out of their terrible tragedy.

    DRJ (a431ca)

  12. Yes, they’ve put a face on this argument that the MSM can deal with without the usual RW negatives. They now have to deal with it.
It is the pols who refuse to pull their heads out of their backsides.

    Another Drew (f9dd2c)

  13. If Order 40 is necessary to encourage informants to speak, then why is the city in a homicide crisis now while it’s in effect!? The illegal informants couldn’t be more protected, and still we are Murderville!

    Patricia (f56a97)

  14. They don’t come forward because they are more in fear of being killed by the gangs for talking, then they are of being deported. As long as the gangs have this un-answered power over people, anarchy will rule the streets of L.A., and the Police will just be empty blue suits.

    Another Drew (f9dd2c)

  15. Wow….

Guess this is the topic of the week or something. (with a story like this, it’s hard to imagine how it wouldn’t be– a woman in Iraq, defending the country, loses her shining-star son to a massive violator of that country’s laws?)

I found a few related stories in something I posted recently, too:

  16. This is why it was stupid for Blacks to vote for Mayor Tony. Mayor Tony’s power center is the Eastside, which is entirely comfortable the current state of affairs.

Blacks bet, collectively, on the deterrent effect of “harder” gang bangers and found that they are overmatched in brutality and out-numbered.

It’s all over but the shouting. There are more Latinos and Latino voters than Blacks, so Special Order 40 will continue. As will more murders.

The only thing left is how quickly Blacks are ethnically cleansed out of their neighborhoods.

Mayor Tony will never allow this order to be rescinded. I feel for the family but it’s a massive waste of time.

  17. The Hindus discovered zero, just like the number notation we use. Arabs copied the discoveries and killed the discoverers. Sound familiar ?
