Obama’s Money (Updated: Clinton’s, too)
[Guest post by DRJ]
Barack Obama raised $40M in March from 442,000 people, over 218,000 of which were first-time donors.
Can there be any doubt that Obama won’t honor his commitment, which he now claims was not a pledge, to use federal funds?
UPDATED 4/3/2008: ABC reports that Hillary Clinton took in $20M in March.

you don’t often see a conservative chastising a liberal for not taking and spending federal money.
i pledged to lose weight in 2008. three months in and still rotund.
at least obama released his tax returns. why don’t you go after hillary for not releasing hers?

She’s planning on releasing the 2007 returns – so she doesn’t have to release the 2006 returns.
Unfortunately, it is tough to get traction on someone who has already pledged to release the returns ’shortly’.

ADA,
I thought the point was that Obama failed to keep his pledge, something most conservatives care about. If it’s “only money” then by all means, I hope he spends it all.

the only point here is to have more money than your opponent, so that you and your 527 groups can outspend him/her over the next seven months. it is naive to expect a politician to forego a greater funding source in favor of a lesser, pledge or no pledge. a broken promise in this context is reprehensible in the same sense as an intentional foul at the end of a close basketball game. i’m awarding two free throws to john mccain for this foul, but i expect him to miss one or both.

I agree that it sounds like Obama won’t keep his federal funding pledge. Politicians (like any people) can always come up with some reason not to do what they promise, but this obviously makes it hard to trust Obama to keep any promise or pledge he makes.

I would like to see the FEC audit a random 1,000 of Obama’s small contributions. Just the postmark to begin with.

To compare with McCain:
1. On public financing: McCain has an issue with signing up for public financing in the primary and then trying to back out (indeed, he is already over the limit). The problem is that although he didn’t actually take the matching funds per se, he pledged them as collateral for a loan which is supposed to lock him in. (His lawyers have an answer for this one, saying that the way they wrote the contract he technically didn’t pledge the funds as collateral, it just looks that way. Regardless of whether that works in the court of law, that sounds pretty dicey in the court of public opinion.)
2. On tax returns: He has never released a tax return, but he now pledges to release the 2007 return after he files it. (In fairness, I don’t think there is the semi-backing away from a pledge angle as with Hillary with her somewhat elastic “shortly”.)
All a way of saying at least on these two issues, remember the parable about glass houses.

Baracky will continue to lie, and the MSM will continue to let him. Did you know he does not take money from lobbyists or those evil corporations? An abject liar.

Haw haw I LOVE this game! So here is the jist of about 9 zillion posts over at Crooks and Liar “McCain will continue to lie, and the MSM will continue to let him. Did you know [he believes in campaign reform so he'll get less] money from lobbyists or those evil corporations? An abject liar.”
It’s like switching Duracell AA batteries with Duracell-Extra AA batteries.
