Before the Texas Democratic Debate

[Guest post by DRJ]

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will debate tonight in Austin at a University of Texas gymnasium, which is why the spectators will be seated on orange chairs. The debate is moderated by CNN’s Campbell Brown.

Meanwhile, the candidates are resting at undisclosed locations after campaigning today in South Texas, Houston and Austin. Here’s an Austin American-Statesman pre-debate photo from Obama’s visit with UT football coach Mack Brown:

Obama at UT

The caption from the Statesman: “And then there’s this one, which the candidate might regret. He’s posing with Earl Campbell’s Heisman Trophy while making like Desmond Howard with the Heisman pose. (Hey, at least Earl could run to the right as well as the left.) Among college football fans, this might be like Dukakis in the tank.”

There are more pre-debate pictures of Obama here and another one here of Hillary Clinton wearing Longhorn burnt orange.

  1. *rolls his eyes*

Is it just me, or does Obama look like the kind of guy that yell “HOMERN!!!” after a fieldgoal?

  2. What kind of moron wears a maroon tie (Texas A & M) to UT?

Personally, I’d come closer to voting for Earl Campbell. At least he’s not a socialist.

  3. Obama’s color scheme for ties is pretty consistent – I notice he wears primarily light blue, silver, maroon, and a few other dark colors, so I thought it was pretty astute of Obama to wear maroon while he visited the Horns. It reminded me of the old saying about having your cake and eating it, too.

  4. He just looks like he’s having fun there. It appeared Dukakis was trying to look like a real tanker, not realizing that he looked ridiculous.

Hey, at least Earl could run to the right as well as the left.

    That’s funny right there. 🙂

  5. Go, Hillary girl, go. Harden your heart. Swallow your tears. Don’t let this poacher steal what you’ve been waiting for all your life. Send the palooka back to waiting for a vacancy on the Chicago City Council.

  6. I’ll be looking for a microphone to drop from the ceiling between them, neutral corners, and the bell between rounds.

Was there a weigh in? They are probably close in weight, so it will be fair.

Oh great… Now the Curse of the Cankles is on them as well… Argh!

  8. Why did I just know that Barry O’ is left handed?

  9. The tale of the tape: weight = even (once her makeup gets caked on); measurements = he has a height and reach advantage, she takes him on ankle thickness. Speaking of that, one of Earl Campbell’s thighs was thicker than Obama’s whole torso.

    Regarding the photo, two comments:
    1) “Run, OJ, run!”
    2) It’s “steers and queers” in Texas, right? Well, I see a bull’s head on the wall, and then there’s . . .

  10. Missed It,

It’s hard to insult everyone in one comment but you are making it look easy.

  11. Hey, you have to respect a new organization that uses the phrase ‘gussied up’.

  12. That photo is just the type of shot that is needed to bring the Obamaites down from the clouds.

I worry that Johnny Mac is going to look older and older as the campaign develops, thanks to selective photo editing by the MSM.

Hopefully more photos of Obama, showing him to be a “skinny” man, too slight to stand up to the evil dudes, will be available on the web.

If I were McCain, I’d get out the Photoshop and take 15-20 pounds off Barry every time they were able to release a photo. And always have Michelle looking taller and more Dudely than Barry…by comparison.

  13. Aw, he’s no America-bashing socialist! He’s just like us!

    Patricia (f56a97)

  14. What is this talk about his tie? Who the hell cares! We should be listening to the issues, not the fashion. Seriously….people! Get a life. I love fashion, but I did not even pay attention to his tie. At least it was not the old boring blue or red tie.

    Oliver (f4a74e)

  15. I like it. It reminds me of Emmanuel Lewis doing M.C. Hammer’s Can’t touch this. Hip, irreverent, and funny.

NYT editorial: You’ll never see McCain doing something like that. He’s too old. He’s too angry. He might break a hip or something.

  16. DRJ,

I thought I was quite respectful towards Earl Campbell — a “big man” in the best sense of the term.
