President’s Minister Endorses Obama

President George W. Bush’s spiritual advisor, Houston minister Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, will endorse and campaign for Barack Obama:

“The Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, longtime spiritual adviser to President George W. Bush and senior pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, plans to campaign on behalf of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Caldwell said Saturday that he’s endorsing Obama’s presidential campaign because of the senator’s “character, confidence and courage.” He emphasized that his support is personal and not tied to his job as pastor of the large United Methodist church. The pastor, however, said he has informed his congregation of his presidential choice and that Obama may even pay a visit to his church.

“I have been in contact with the Obama campaign team,” he said. “I will be making visits on his behalf.” Caldwell touted Obama as someone who is electable and “would do a wonderful job to bring people together to pursue a common vision we all have.”

Caldwell reports that Bush is “OK” with his endorsement.

US Border Patrol Agent Killed (Updated)

Fox News reports a Border Patrol agent has been killed as he attempted to put down a spike strip to stop a fleeing vehicle that illegally entered the US:

“A Border Patrol agent trying to stop a vehicle that had illegally entered the U.S. was struck and killed Saturday in southeastern California, agency officials said.

The agent was killed about 20 miles west of Yuma in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, a spot along the border that is popular with off-road vehicle enthusiasts and frequently used by smugglers. The agent attempted to impede the vehicle’s progress before he was hit, but the Border Patrol did not immediately have more information, said agent Eric Anderson, a spokesman for the agency’s Yuma sector.

The name of the agent killed was not immediately released because his family had not been notified.

Witnesses told the Yuma Sun newspaper that agents were chasing a Hummer and a Ford pickup on Interstate 8 when the vehicles turned into the dunes and fled toward Mexico. The agent was trying to place spike strips in their path and was struck by the Hummer, they said.

The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest dunes in California, extending north of the border for 40 miles and averaging five miles wide.”

According to this Houston Chronicle article, Ford pickups are smugglers’ favorite vehicles.

UPDATE 1/24/2008: A suspect has been arrested in Mexico. See Steve’s comment #32.
