  1. Senator Clinton is sure to be especially upset.

Now having gotten the snark out of my system, after reading about this earlier I searched and viewed pix from the summit and it is incredible. Cannot be begin to imagine the feeling when he realized he couldnt go any higher, that they had done what no one else had done. I’m always impressed by people who have been the first to accomplish things in the world.

  3. the sherpa tenzing norgay conquered everest simultaneously with sir edmund, but has never received the equal billing to which i believe he’s entitled.

several years ago, a young sherpa couple on the slopes of everest sat down to a dinner of grilled yak. the husband, seeing that his wife appeared troubled, asked her “what’s the matter, my darling?”

the wife said “brad and jen are getting divorced. if a beautiful couple who has everything like them can’t make it, what possible hope is there for us?”

    the husband said “mmmflgthwskl.”

the wife said “don’t talk with your mouth full, you disgusting pig.”

  4. #4 – In all the recorded accounts Hillary NEVER shorted Norgay in regards to equal credit. It wasnt until 1979 that Hillary finally said his was the first foot on the summit and even then he was adamant that it didnt matter, they were a team and Norgay was just as responsible as he was for their success. If any blame is to be assigned for Norgay being shorted blame the media.

  5. Was sorry to read this pioneer had died. Had heard before he was a modest man (this article says the same), yet he inspired so many others by doing what no one had done before.

    BTW ada, terrific joke. LOL

  7. It’s a shame to see such an accomplished man pass. But, honestly, he peaked years ago.

  8. Not to take anything away from Sir Edmund or Norgay, whose accomplishment is truly inspiring, I just found this interesting. Number of fatalities is related to accessibility, popularity and difficulty. Everest comes in at #7.

  9. ManlyDad #9,

Even people with too much money and leisure and not enough sense need to die some way. What … do you want them to get run over by a bus? 😉

  11. Tensing Norgay was cited in every report I ever recall reading about the conquest of Everest, and if anything his enabling physical prowess was given prominence over the obvious technical planning and organizational accomplishments of Sir Hillary. Liberal guilt trip rejected, sorry.

Nobody has mentioned that irony that while Sir Edmund himself survived the Himalayas, he paid a heavy price to them anyway… his wife and daughter were killed there in a plane crash some years ago, while visiting him during one of his many trips there in aid of the locals.

And a more personal note: watching a TV program about Hillary some years ago, I saw a segment on the loss of his family that showed their plane that eventually crashed taxiing up to the camera after landing at a high mountain airfield. The plane was a DeHavilland Twin Otter, which I am very familiar with, and which is powered by two turboprop engines.

As the plane in the video pulled to a stop, I could clearly hear on the soundtrack the sputter and pop typical of a piston engine indling and shutting down. It was very realistic, nicely syncronized with the motion of the props, but my knowledge allowed me to realize that the sound had to be a total fake, dubbed in later. But not one person in a thousand would have detected that.

I still harken back to that insignificant little incident as something that set me to wondering more and more what else I was seeing and hearing in the mass media was totally fake!
