Matt Welch to Head Up reason Magazine

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 8:29 pm

Matt Welch is becoming the editor in chief of reason magazine. I have known this for over a month, when I overheard Emmanuelle telling Eugene Volokh about it at Matt’s book party. But it was clear that Matt didn’t want this out, so I didn’t say anything.

(Knowing that Matt wanted to keep the move under wraps didn’t stop Luke Ford from spilling the beans. But, unlike Matt’s former employers at the L.A. Times, I don’t take the view that publication of news in any venue justifies spreading it as far and wide as possible. Hence, the silence until today.)

I’m thrilled to finally have the opportunity to publicly congratulate Matt.

  1. Eugene Volokh, Matt Welch, Jan Crawford Greenburg – you have some fine friends.

  2. I was thinking something similar, DRJ. Actually, I was thinking that Patterico was name-dropping on us, big-timing us. lol

  3. Hey, you drop the names you can, baby.

  4. Seriously, though, it’s a great move for Matt — and it seemed like a ridiculously long time for me to be able to congratulate him here.

I saw the Luke Ford thing a while back, but while I have met Luke a couple of times (there’s that name-dropping thing again) he is ridiculously willing to sacrifice any personal sense of loyalty for a scoop. As he makes quite clear in the linked post.

For me to say I wouldn’t do that is like Hillary saying she is the “disciplined Clinton” — it may be true, but man, it ain’t saying much.

  5. Sorry, Luke. Am I saying anything that isn’t true?

  6. Reason is very fortunate, and so is Matt Welch. I’ve admired Matt’s work for years, and it’s great for all concerned.

The LA Times, however, is not so fortunate. People of Matt’s credibility, not only in the insular world of journalism but in the larger community, are very difficult to find.

  7. Congratulations to Mr. Welch, he deserves his new position.

  8. Fabulous news. Matt’s a teriffic writer and editor and person.

  9. Judging from the comments here, Matt’s leaving the LATimes is more proof that the LATImes is hoplessly biased and not worth saving.

  10. I was just letting my inner Reagen be Reagen.
