Not sure how to address this problem — anyone else having trouble getting onto Politico.Com?

For several days now I have not been able to get Politico.com to load when I go to their website.  I generally get the home page up but the little Windows “hourglass” stays on the screen and I can’t navigate around the site, click “Stop” or anything else.  When I right click on button the bottom of the screen and hit “close” I get the message “This program is not responding” and I have to just close out Explorer.

I’m working on a brand new HP laptop, and I know that in the past when I’ve encountered this problem from time to time with my old computer it was usually because of some banner ad running on the website that my computer had an objection to.

But the problem I’m having now with Politico is constant — their site is simply unavailable to me, and its the only site I have this problem with.  I’m hoping someone here has an idea, or someone from Politico will read this and figure out what the problem is.

  1. Just tried it @ 1203, 11/16/2007, had no problem.

  2. I got in in under a second in Firefox 2.x and Internet Explorer 6 and 7 on Windows XP with a 32-bit processor. No problem at all.

Could you be using a shared IP address, which was banned by Politico? Have you thought about using a Proxy Server (going through another IP address) or another internet access location to get in to see if this works?

  3. It must be some setting on my new computer, but I’ve not no idea where to start in trying to fix it. I’m a little challenged in that regard. I’m good at finding the “Power” button and typing, but beyond that its pretty much a crapshoot.

  4. I just tried it also. Had no problem. Try going in through a proxy server or using a different IP address, like at a friend’s house or an office computer.

  5. WLS, I can’t imagine any error on a new computer barring malware that would prevent you from visiting one specific website. And HP wouldn’t let that on; there’d be no reason to. POSSIBLY malware to send your info to another site in China, like the recent Maxtor hard drive issues… but barring one conservative blog? Nah.

I’m sure the problem is elsewhere.

  6. WLS,
Do you have Vista or XP as the O/S. If you have Vista I’d recommend downloading the firefox or opera browser and trying to connect. Vista has some extra security features that are built into the browser that may be the cause.

  7. And definitely choose Firefox over Opera.

  8. FireFox is more popular, but I still think that Opera is better (but then I’m used to it, having started back with version 2.x.) Either is far superior to IE.

Trying one of those when IE doesn’t produce the desired results is always the first step.

  9. Firefox renders more pages correctly and allows much better customizationd Opera, pointedly, does not.

Firefox also handles the CSS hover property properly and Opera hasn’t been able to fix this for years. This leaves some annoying results on many web pages in Opera and only Opera. Heck, you fix them in IE 5+ with a Javascript, but can’t do a damn thing in Opera. For this reason, many web designers hate Opera, second only to Internet Explorer.

    Firefox — all the way!

  10. I am on a relatively new HP laptop running Vista. The site loaded almost instantly for me, using Firefox. There are alot of ads. Have you tried clearing your cache? That often helps.

  11. (OT:comparing the two on Politico , it seems to me that Opera does a better job, showing the address as well as the label of the hover links; FireFox shows nothing if there’s not a label.)

  12. It souns like it could be a javascript or flash problem. Turn them off and try again.

  13. If it’s a new laptop, you might now have all the latest updates to Windows and IE. I know, that sounds weird, but if there are updates since the laptop was created, you might not have them. Check with Microsoft’s web site for updates.

If Firefox also can’t get you to the web site, it could be your anti-virus software. Post again or see the help for that program.

If that doesn’t work, we’ll start talking about pinging servers and ip adresses.

  15. I have experienced intermittent problems with some sites and from looking at the bottom bar of what is loading out of the web page it is usually stalled at the loading of ads via third party servers. In short some of the ad servers don’t have enough capacity or high enough backbone access to keep up with the demand they are trying to meet.

Think of it like airline overbooking.

I find in many cases just hitting the stop button in the browser followed by refresh and the new reload may fix the session issue which likely dropped into the bit bucket somewhere in the path.

  16. Politico’s links from drudgereport never work for me on my mac, it’s the only site this happens with. I think it must get overloaded or something.
