Border Fences are Popping up All Over

The open border between the UK and Ireland will end in 2009 with the construction of an electronic border:

“The free movement of people between Ireland and Britain has survived centuries of tension and even terrorism, but that tradition is about to end with the severing of a special relationship between the two countries because of tighter security procedures.

Bertie Ahern, the Irish Prime Minister, confirmed in the Dáil yesterday that the Common Travel Area – which was created between the Republic of Ireland and the UK after independence – is to be dismantled with the construction of an electronic border control system by Britain by 2009.

Mr Ahern said that it was now only sensible for the Republic to follow Britain’s example and introduce similar security. The new border controls will collect and analyse passenger information, much of it in advance of travel in a similar fashion to controls already in use in the US.

Mr Ahern told Parliament that Britain began to tighten up border security after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.”

The government’s concern is Islamic terrorists:

“Mr Ahern said: “British authorities have no plans whatsoever to introduce any controls on the land border between North and South. I want to make that clear. All they are looking at is increased cross-border cooperation, targeting illegal immigrants.”

One Irish newspaper commented that “there have long been concerns that Islamic militants have been using Ireland as a backdoor entry system to the UK via the North.”

As far back as 2001, there were reports that Islamic terrorists posing as Afghani refugees were using Ireland as a way-station to enter the UK.

These reports are very similar to reports that Islamic terrorists are using Mexico as a conduit to enter the US. I view this as more evidence that 9/11 changed the world and the US should secure its borders.

  1. With its typical performance of doing something and not shouting it from the rooftops, the government has in the last year started the initial stages of a big crackdown on illegal immigration. Border fences popping up here and there, slowly increasing budgets, new technologies, increasing number of raids on businesses that employ illegals… soften up the beachhead and leave the decision of whether to continue pushing or back off to the next President.

Problem, start of a solution, final decision handed off to the next President. Hey, that sounds like Bush’s actions on Iraq too. And the budget. And taxes. And entitlements. And… you get the idea.

  2. I think it’s a sign that the countries of the industrialized world are turning insular and inward-looking, and that the openness of the last decade is fading.

  3. I think it’s a sign that the countries of the industrialized world aren’t interested in economic suicide.

  4. I think it’s s sign that the PC world of race baiting (entenched for decades)has long ago reached such immense proportion that “after the next disaster” is the running plan, just it was with N.O. levies.
In WW2, they just camped up 100,000 and that was the end of it. In 2002, the thought of such a thing even offshore in GITMO is akin to “genocide”, and is “proof positive” of “insidious torturing” and “total destruction” of “human rights”.
An immesne henious scandal of outrageous incivility is a “flushed Koran”.
So we’ve come a long way. The left wing loons are in control of all the branchs of the government, through deep and widespread insertions in the overbulked cumbersome bureaucracy.
You get movement at airports, because those same lecherous thousands of bureaucratic left wing goofs have to fly all the time on their $8,000.00 illegal but non-criminal business class action flights.
So, here we sit, lucky the POTUS has ” broken every law known to former Presidents ” with his secret wiretapping and renditions and thumbs up to “get them”, with the latest being an Osama apology to his formerly decieved allies.
Watching the idiocy of V Plame marketing her book the last couple of days has been further, quite enlightening. How a dumb blonde manages to agree with CM cuckoo spews since she can’t come up with them on her own makes me shudder to think this is the vast majority of the post Church CIA desk jockeys, who in her case is visibly excused for massive public lies and perjury in front of the Congress.
I have never been so against a party in all my life, but the democrats have proven the bottom of the barrel isn’t low enough, they’re crawling underneath it, a slug, sliming around in the mud and darkness.
This border issue is worse than the leading demo dimwits called to the truth amazingly by TR in a recent debate. ” Uhh, no, can’t say troops hopme before 2013.”
Yes, they’re in DC to work once in a great while, and the fear of that notorious unfinished/ hit the same target again AQ attack yet to come as was seen in NYC has them babbling lies for political points, but checking the numbers and allowing only certain specified defections when it comes down to actual policies. In defense, the PC baiter crowd hasn’t utterly stripped them of dignity yet. In the border fence arena though, it seems they have already declared dimdemo defeat.

  5. I think it’s a sign that the UK and Ireland think fences (even electronic fences) work.
