It’s All in My Head
[Guest post by DRJ]
A recent but small Canadian study suggests concussions may cause longer-lasting mental impairment in women than in men:
“Up to eight months after suffering a concussion, female college-level soccer players still have impairment in certain mental functions, Canadian researchers report.
“Contrary to what is typically thought, these effects are longer-lasting,” Dr. Dave Ellemberg of the University of Montreal told Reuters Health. “They’re mild, but yet they’re prolonged.”
Any article that compares mental impairment between men and women is a goldmine for jokes, but the good news is this gives me an excuse for another 3 months.

Now they’re trying to blame it on concussions. What’ll they think of next?

nk (6e4f93) — 10/18/2007 @ 4:01 pmDRJ – If women read this and do something boneheaded, all of a sudden we’ll have a rash of undiagnosed concussions surfacing is what I anticipate.
daleyrocks (906622) — 10/18/2007 @ 4:07 pmWait… So blows to the head make women crazier?
My god, we’re doomed…
Scott Jacobs (a1de9d) — 10/18/2007 @ 4:18 pmIn today’s PC world, by concluding there are differences between men and women, this researcher will be burned at the stake.
Perfect Sense (b6ec8c) — 10/18/2007 @ 4:52 pmGreat jokes, but I know you’re jealous that women think with both sides of their brain.
DRJ (67ced6) — 10/18/2007 @ 5:35 pmWow, that is an interesting study. I wonder how they could account for the disparity in severity of injury, among other things.
I hope you’re feeling better soon.
Itsme (77c7e1) — 10/18/2007 @ 6:15 pmItsme,
It is an interesting study. What jumped out at me is it affected flexibility and inhibition. Inhibition? That’s interesting. I wonder how they measured that.
Finally, thanks to you and others who have always been generous in wishing me well.
DRJ (67ced6) — 10/18/2007 @ 6:26 pmYeah, how would you measure that? Especially with a bunch of college kids.
It can’t be fun to be sidelined, but you seem to have a positive outlook on all.
Itsme (77c7e1) — 10/18/2007 @ 6:35 pmWow. Good thing Larry Summers didn’t suggest this. Heh.
Dana (0a9c7f) — 10/18/2007 @ 6:49 pmYou need both sides to keep up!

I can see it now. Some young thing, with a fresh blow to the head, is approached by a slightly dumpy researcher…
“Hey baby…”
Ah science… 🙂
And DRJ, I’m glad you’re better as well. 🙂
I just hope yer not well enough to come kick my ass. 😉
Scott Jacobs (a1de9d) — 10/18/2007 @ 7:29 pmNever, Scott, and heh.
DRJ (67ced6) — 10/18/2007 @ 7:32 pmNot even a little?
Crap, I think I’m disappointed… 😉
Scott Jacobs (a1de9d) — 10/18/2007 @ 8:20 pmMultiple concussions really suck. I got 4 in my Junior year of high school football, and thus ended my chances at being a benchwarmer at a NAIA Division 27 school.
JD (ba4c77) — 10/18/2007 @ 8:52 pmDRJ – Was there a difference in the women between blonds and brunettes or was that not considered?
daleyrocks (906622) — 10/18/2007 @ 9:44 pmMore inhibited, or less? men want to know.
Hazy (d671ab) — 10/18/2007 @ 10:18 pmOh, this explains Randi Rhodes getting falling down drunk, getting a concussion, and conjuring up an attack by “Reich wing thugs”.
PCD (b47ba5) — 10/19/2007 @ 7:01 amHeh. More support for my uncle’s insistence that him being hit in the head was the least dangerous thing going…..
