They tried to quietly announce it late on Friday, right before the start of Yom Kippur. They also lied to KFI reporter Eric Leonard by denying the story up until the last minute.

Look for serious blowback/fallout starting on Monday.

Background on this frivolous case here and here and here.

  1. This is disappointing and I don’t even live (or pay taxes) in LA.

  2. I would investigate his lawyers’ political connections with particular emphasis on “political contributions” to the city council, mayor and Democratic Party generally. Hey, I lived in Chicago a very long time. “Kid, you gots to knows the right peoples. If you knows the right peoples everything comeuppa roses.”

  3. From Tennie’s view, it is merely a career move. The timing of his suit, when he’s eligible for a pension is more than coincidence. Others choose the I-O-D tax-free pension route. Both are more common than one might think.

  4. My understanding is Tennie has about 20 years on the job. As part of the settlement he wants another 10 years service credit. That could easily be worth another million dollars over his lifetime. This would gibe him a 90% retirement vs a 60% retirement. Big $$$$…

  5. This might be a good time to set up a downtown kiosk selling pitchforks, torches, and other bits of Americana (anyone want to bid for the tar and feather concession?).

    Huh? Sorry, you lost me.

  7. EW1:

I-O-D = Injured on Duty. Intended to take care of those well & truly hurt on the job, it’s degenerated to the place where stress, hurt feelings, oppression have also become duty-related “injuries.” “My supervisor has it out for me because I’m a __________. I can’t work anymore and it’s the City’s fault.”

IOD pensions are free from income tax.

It’s an optional career path for greedy whiners.

(I actually heard this from a CHP ridealong. His guide/partner expressed this as her plan.)

  8. I’ve heard that the injured retirement is common among the CHP top brass. Sounds like it’s filtering down to the rank and file. A couple of years ago one the CHP Chiefs who retired on an injury leave was hired as a County Sheriff or Under Sherrif and was earning 2 salaries. If you are too injured to keep working at your job how can you take another similar job and collect 2 paychecks on tax payers backs? No integrity at all. It’s incredible.

  11. […] F    Villaraigosa quietly negotiates a “settlement” on the evening of Yom Kippur leaving L.A. residents on the hook for $2.8 million in ‘Dog food’ Tennie Pierce suit. This was $100,000 more than the first settlement he vetoed months earlier. Patterico’s Pontifications […]
