It’s Mucho Amnesty!

Via Instapundit, Mickey Kaus says the next version of immigration reform is worse than the last:

“Democratic Sen. Durbin’s revived “DREAM Act” is typically billed as a way to address “the tragedy of young people”–students who were brought into the country when they were very young, and now want to attend college.

But it’s actually not that bad. It’s much, much worse! Kris Kobach persuasively argues that, thanks to loose drafting, it’s potentially a huge de facto legalization program of the sort many observers thought had been defeated.”

Kobach says that the Dream Act applies to anyone who illegally entered the US before age 16, has been in the US at least 5 years, and has been admitted to any technical, 2-year or 4-year college. It provides immigrants with an immediate conditional green card and they can request green card status for their parents.

The Dream Act also extends student loan and federal work-study benefits and repeals a 1996 federal law prohibiting states from offering in-state tuition to illegal immigrants unless out-of-state students receive the same tuition break.

There’s an extensive explanation and much more detail here. Please read it all.

  1. I guess the dhimmierats are really desperate. Its not enough to raise the dead, get pets and felons to vote, now they’re making a last ditch effort for those voters who are “undocumented.” Well thats one way to win the election.

  2. why worry about this silly bill when Bush can (will?) just issue a presidential pardon to every illegal just before his successor takes the oath?

  3. You forgot the part about the stipend.

  4. So now it’s a “tragedy” that someone has to pay for college? The pandering is nauseating.

  5. Everyone is worrying for nothing. As happened with the last bill a slew of amendments will be added effectively killing the bill. Just more drama for the politicians to use in their quest for votes. The republican base will ramp up Lou Dobbs, Chris Simcox and all the others to scare the populus into voting down the bill. Legal Hispanic Americans repelled by the xenophobia will see the Democratic party as one with more respect for them. Bush’s 40% Hispanic voters from 2004 will be the best they ever get – 08 will see those numbers in the 20’s.

If Hillary is elected and the Dems pick up significant nubmers of seats in the senate and house readers will really love the bill that does finally pass. They will look back fondly on a reasonable bill that Bush tried to push but was defeated.

  6. Durbin is sincere. Wrong but sincere. He is pro-immigrant and immigrants getting the roundaround from INS/BCIS can always count on help from his office. A large part of his constituency is “ethnics”, not just Hispanics but also Irish, Polish, Greek, Czechoslovakian and the rest of Chicago’s amalgam.
