O.J. Simpson Arrested in Las Vegas (Updated)

Filed under: Law — DRJ @ 12:33 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

A cooperative O.J. Simpson has been arrested in Las Vegas on multiple felony charges:

“O.J. Simpson was arrested Sunday and faces multiple felony charges in an alleged armed robbery of collectors involving the former football great’s sports memorabilia, authorities said. Simpson was arrested shortly after 11 a.m., Capt. James Dillon said.

The charges against Simpson will include robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery and burglary with a firearm, all felonies, Dillon said. More charges could be brought against him, he said.

Simpson was being held at Las Vegas police offices pending the arrival of his lawyer, who was expected later Sunday, Dillon said. “He was very cooperative, there were no issues,” Dillon said.”

My favorite part:

“Simpson told The Associated Press on Saturday that he did not call the police to help reclaim the items because he has found the police unresponsive to him ever since his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were killed in 1994.

“The police, since my trouble, have not worked out for me,” he said, noting that whenever he has called the police “It just becomes a story about O.J.”

On the other hand, this is good news for Greta Van Susteren.

Update: MSNBC and Fox News report the judge has ordered O.J. Simpson held without bail.

UPDATE FROM PATTERICO: The Smoking Gun has the mug shot.

  1. As far as I’m concerned, best wishes to the Goldman family. Irrespective of the ownership of the memorabilia at issue and any possible attachment of OJ’s bail funds, this can only be a boost to the sales of “If I Did It.” I hope the Goldmans, in the months to come and in a variety of ways, reap hugely toward the balance of their civil judgment.

  2. Yeah, I guess contact with the police hasn’t worked out for him.

    What a creep.

  3. On the other hand, this is good news for Greta Van Susteren.

I have to admit that my stomach turns at the idea of how many “commentators” have launched careers out of this tragedy.

  7. OJailed Simpson…

Couldn’t happen to a “nicer” guy. O.J. Simpson was arrested Sunday on charges related to the armed robbery of Simpson sports memorabilia from a Las Vegas hotel room, Las Vegas police said Sunday. Lead investigator Lt. Clint Nichols said Sunday……

  8. The postman may finally ring for OJ. He did his dirt in a Las Vegas hotel/casino. There’s nothing more protectible in Las Vegas than that.

  9. Well, OJ’s detention is going to give the real murderers an extra head start on their escape.

He’ll have to start all over again when he’s released. Back to Pinecrest, and then the Palos Verdes course, then Rancho Cucamonga….

    Oy.

Go away OJ, just go away.

  11. I bet a dollar to a dozen Krispy Kremes that O.J. goes away for this one.

  12. I bet the person that was arrested yesterday implicated O.J. in exchange for a lesser charge or a recommendation for more lenient sentencing.

What I really want to know is who will be representing O.J.

  13. o.j. is approaching the status of outlaw in the ancient english tradition: outside the protection of the law. let’s say he shows up at your house, or you see him heading in your direction in the parking lot. you know what he did to ron and nicole, add to that the propensity to suddenly burst into hotel rooms and relieve people of their property at gunpoint, so…is he an immediate threat warranting deadly counterforce? it’s only a matter of time before someone answers this question in the affirmative.

  19. This is going to burn a lot of people. It’s going to hurt the Las Vegas Police, the Clark County District Attorney, and numberous bloggers and news outlets. No matter how much you hate a man, it does not mean he’s automatically in the wrong no matter what happened. What happened or didn’t happen a decade ago has nothing to do with what just recently happened.

The police have been, and are being, vindictive, childish, and amateurish with regards to O.J. Simpson. Bloggers have been, and are being, vindictive, childish, and amateurish with regards to O.J. Simpson. Bush Derangment Syndrome (BDS) has mutated and become Simpson Derangement Syndrome (SDS). BDS has destroyed many lives and reputatins, how many lives and reputations will SDS destroy?

  23. Alan, a lot of us think OJ got away with murder, literally.

Most of us would have preferred to never hear of him again.

But if we have to hear of him again, hearing that he’s gotten himself in trouble with the law again is no surprise. “gotten himself in trouble with the law” is a euphemism for “committed a crime and gotten caught”. And apparently it was a falling out over some of the assets he’d hidden from the $33 million judgment against him. It’s poetic.

  24. I do not wish to defend OJ with this, but when is it you lose the right to your property? When it is stolen? If the police legally are responsible for recovery of stolen property, can they be held complicite if the property is not recovered? If you steal my property, and I know where it is located, I am coming to get it and I will bring whatever is necessary to regain possession. OJ was found innocent in his murder trial. Agree or disagree, that is the law. He will be judged by people who think he got away with murder. That is not justice.

  27. Zelsdorf – part of me wants to agree with you. The other part thinks that if it took tax evasion to rid ourselves of Al Capone, armed robbery should be just fine for OJ.

    Comment by JD — 9/17/2007 @ 10:02 am

  28. Actually, Zelsdorf, O.J. was found “not guilty”, which is distinctly different than being found innocent. Then in a civil trial he was found responsible for the murders. But in any case:

If someone allegedly steals your property – actually, even if someone outright steals your property – you are still committing a serious felony if you “come to get it” via a robbery, simple as that. Especially if whatever you deem “necessary” to get it is a weapon and/or armed accomplices. Then, you’re prison-bound. Like O.J.!

The biggest part of this story is the years and years of argument that will come about regarding whether O.J. can get a fair trial, anywhere in the universe.

My take is that he can not get a fair trial, but by that I mean, a trial not biased in his favor. This however is not what O.J. groupies are talking about.

Alan Kellogg above gives us a prelude to what we’ll be seeing for years to come.

You cannot take the law into your hands. That’s what vigillantes do, and it’s against the law.

There’s due process, that’s what OJ got in his famous trial. Going to someone, pointing a gun, and taking the stuff, kinda sounds like a thug.

The “stuff” was to be sold to pay the Goldman’s and the estate of his ex. So, if he was hiding valuables, he’s in conflict with the law. Who know’s, money laudering?

OJ is really as dumb as people say he is.

  30. Zelsdorf Ragshaft III #24,

The Goldman family may have a superior right to O.J. Simpson’s memorabilia, and it seems one of the collectors in this incident was Alfred Beardsley – who has good reason to know that’s the case:

A memorabilia collector was ordered Tuesday [Nov. 23, 2004] to turn over O.J. Simpson’s press credentials from the 1984 Olympics in another tiny step toward satisfying a $33.5 million award in a lawsuit that found Simpson liable for the slayings of his ex-wife and her friend. The order was issued after a closed-door court hearing to determine whether Simpson is hiding assets from the family of Ron Goldman, who was slain with Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994.

Alfred Beardsley, a real estate agent and collector, was questioned by attorney Peter Csato, who represents Goldman’s father, Fred. Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg then ordered Beardsley to turn over the press credentials, which Simpson wore as an Olympics commentator for ABC-TV, by Dec. 14.”

Simpson has made it clear he will everything possible to avoid paying the Goldman family:

“Simpson, on his way to play golf, reacted with anger when asked about the allegations.

“I’ve said this so many times, I’ve said it to Fred’s face in debtor hearings: ‘If I have to work to pay them, I won’t work,’” Simpson told WSVN-TV in Miami on Tuesday. “It’s that simple. So I’ll just play golf every day.”

    Sad, isn’t it?

  34. And what about this from the TMZ site:

Riccio also says he has audio of Bruce Fromong saying he helped Simpson hide money in offshore accounts.

And there’s this: Riccio’s partner, Jeff Woolf, says Simpson left a message on Riccio’s cellphone trying to convince him that there was no gun involved in the robbery.
