The Big Shrimp

This Houston Chronicle article is not what you usually read here but you don’t see stories like this every day:

“Along the waterfront tiny Brian Edward Mawhorr is known as ‘the big shrimp,’ and there’s little wonder why. He was born on the shrimp boat Raindear almost 30 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico early Wednesday.

‘He’s our little miracle baby,’ his mother, Cindy Preisel, said as she showed off the piece of green shrimp net twine that boat captain Edward Kiesel used to tie off Brian’s umbilical cord after he delivered the breech baby.”

Obstetricians have problems delivering breech babies and this shrimp boat captain did it without instructions. I have profound respect for these shrimpers’ obstetrical abilities and ingenuity:

“The baby’s first bottle was an emptied and boiled soy sauce bottle with a nipple made from the finger of a rubber shrimper’s glove. He was swaddled in paper and cloth towels.”

I wonder if the birth certificate will list his “Place of Birth” as “Raindear, USA.”

Happy Birthday, Big Shrimp.

  1. Actually, if he was born in international waters, then he’s an illegal immigrant from the Gulf of Mexico. Where’s ICE when you need them?

Seriously, I assume the birth records will say Freeport TX. But Capt. Keisel is to be both congratulated and condoled. He now needs to find a whole new crew, and quick, for the rest of shrimping season.

And I wonder how her other two sons feel about a half brother that’s young enough to be their own son.

  2. Heh. Let’s hope for his sake that the Raindear made it into US waters before the birth. If so, I agree the birth certificate will probably say Freeport TX – but IMO Raindear would be more eclectic and fitting.

  3. That was a good story. Just don’t link the Chron’s story about the “chupacabra” corpse from Cuero, DRJ. The pictures in that one are still making my skin crawl.

  4. Actually, Beldar, I had already decided not to read that story … but now you’ve made me want to look!

  9. Since the baby was born on a US flagged vessel, on the high seas, his birth will be registered in the vessels’s port-of-hail (the port listed on its’ stern under the vessel’s name), or, the first US port (port of entry) that it enters.

  10. Maritime law! Well done, Another Drew. I guess that means Mr. Mawhorr could be a Floridian or a Texan.

  11. Texan!
    Floridian!
    Most importantly; He’s an American!
    Welcome aboard, Little Dude.
