We need a Song
[Guest post by DRJ]
Patterico’s Pontifications needs a theme song but it should be something better than the Nixon Peabody song.
Any suggestions?

The theme song from “Law and Order.”

Fave LA song:
Welcome to the boomtown
Pick a habit
We got plenty to go around
Welcome, welcome to the boomtown
All that money makes such a succulent sound
Welcome to the boomtown.

When he’s here, Jimmy Buffett’s “Quietly making noise”, and when he’s not, his “Gypsies in the Palace.”
…
Quietly making noise (quietly making noise)
Starts with kindergarten toys
Not too soft, not too loud
Just enough to draw a crowd
Quietly, quietly, quietly making noise …
…
– Spoken:
“In days of old, when knights were bold,
And journeyed from their castles,
Trusty men were left behind,
Knights needed not the hassles.
They helped themselves to pig and peach,
And drank from King’s own chalice.
Oh, it was a stirring sight
These gypsies in the palace.”
“And some things never change. Hit it boys!”
So long boss, knock ‘em dead, don’t worry ’bout a thing
Wish that we could come along, we’d love to hear you sing
Limo’s here, your bags are packed, the list is by the phone
Me and Snake will watch your place and treat it like our own
Look at all this liquor
Look at all this food
It’s only gonna go to waste
We’re not really being rude
But the good stuff’s in his closet, I swear he wouldn’t mind
Hell we’ll just shoot the lock off, I do it all the time …

Nothings gonna stand in our way by Spectre General. heh…
The fortunate ones
To be fast and free and young
I want to count myself among
The fortunate ones
We won’t be denied
We know that time is on our side
We’ve got the passion and the pride
We won’t be denied
* This generations
With fire in our eyes
Strong are the ties that bind us
We don’t need no alibis
** Nothing’s gonna stand in our way
Nothing’s gonna stand in our way
Nothing’s gonna stand in our way
Not tonight
We want it all
And tonight we got the call
We’re running high but we won’t fall
We want it all
We won’t be denied
Like a breaker at high tide
We’re gonna take this sweet joy ride
We won’t be denied
Grew expectations
Moments in the sun
We’ve waited all our lives
And now we know our time has come

TomJedrz,
The USC Fight Song? I admit it made me laugh (in a good way – it was a fun choice) but if we’re going to play that game, I nominate The Eyes of Texas since Patterico is a UT Law grad or Cornell’s Give My Regards to Davy.
Let’s face it, though – I don’t think Patterico would choose a fight song. We better keep trying.

By genre:
1. Country: I Will Stand My Ground by Darryl Worley
2. Rock: All Star by Smashmouth
3. Pop: Anything But Ordinary by Avril Lavigne (yes, Avril Lavigne… listen to it and give it a chance)
4. Worship: Completely by Ana Laura (from Facing the Giants)
5. Foreign: No. 1 by Boa (Korean)
6. Alternative: LA Song by Christian Kane
7. Grateful Dead (its own category): Victim or the Crime
8. Folk: Leader of the Band by Dan Fogelberg

What rhymes with “Pontifications”?
Comment by Kevin Murphy — 8/27/2007 @ 4:00 pm
“terrific nations?”
Comment by ras — 8/27/2007 @ 4:35 pm
How about classifications, complications, explanations, or even fornications? I don’t think we’re going to find a decent song that rhymes unless we get into the rap music section.
Comment by Stashiu3 — 8/27/2007 @ 4:44 pm
“Certifications?”
“Exonerations?”
“Thirty-three citations?”
Comment by Paul — 8/27/2007 @ 4:45 pm
Plus, it has to complement the background accompaniment (whining) by the usual suspects.

Does Avril gratutitously use any form of the word “motherf—–” in that track, like she does in her new single?
Comment by L.N. Smithee — 8/27/2007 @ 5:20 pm
Nope, earlier stuff. Like I said, give it a chance… she’s not my typical listen either.
Comment by Stashiu3 — 8/27/2007 @ 5:42 pm
I understand that Patterico has written a song himself. But if he does not want to use that I vote for The Song of Death from Once Upon A Time In The West.

Pat-Ter-Ico
Pat-Ter-Ico
We’re here to fight the LA Times
We’re here to dish out harm to slime
But we’re here to talk politics
Maybe this song don’t exactly rhyme
We know what side we’re on; we’re right
And we don’t give in without a fight
But if you’re a loon, you just might
Find your nutty views brought out to light
Pat-Ter-Ico
Pat-Ter-Ico
Even though we’re conservative
We don’t let bad ideas live
To Coulter, Gonzalez, and Buchanan we give
Absolutely nothing postive
We want to deport the criminals first
We know that sock puppets are the worst
Our genius comes in lengthy bursts
Our enemies are permanently cursed
Pat-Ter-Ico
Pat-Ter-Ico
Come on over, we want you to read
Everything we write; yes indeed
Come and tell us what it is you need
To know more about politics, crime, and greed.

I second the first and third comments – Boomtown or “To Live and Die in LA” would be my choices.
This is the site where I first read about “Tuesday Night Music Club” and how David & David got their start. And that piano riff from (NOT Tupac) Wang Chung is just too cool on “To Live and Die in LA.”
I know that it’s been said before, but I second all of the previous comments regarding the lack of efficacy of the ‘link’ button. It would be nice to just highlight text and press ‘link’ vs. the current setup.

I was starting to wonder about that, carlitos. I didn’t figure most of you guys to be fans of the gangsta-rap genre.

My gangsta-rap days are long behind me Levi. Though I did buy the last Nas album, mostly I’m into the mellower stuff now, like Common or Jurassic 5.

OK…my pal DRJ has issued me a personal challenge, and here is my response: the theme song for Patterico’s Pontifications should be the magnificently sardonic and iconoclastic “Fortunate Son.” It has nothing in particular to do with LA or with “the Law.” It is all about attitude. This particular version is especially fun, being from The Ed Sullivan Show almost 40 years ago. Come to think of it, John Fogerty did spend several decades fighting with lawyers to gain control of his own music catalog….

“Lawyers, Guns and Money”
Was, Not Was had a song called “Hello Dad. I’m in Jail” that has a prosecutorial flair to it…

Lawyers, Guns, and Money….oh yeah. Good choice. I stand down.

I crossed paths with Warren a few times, and linked a really interesting recent article about him here: http://www.amusedcynic.com/?p=250
He was wildly talented, and wildly wild.
