Rather than look for gotchas, you would do better to try to some up with a sensible, plausible explanation (that rules out Jim Rockford) for what we intend to do in Iraq and how the current tactics will accomplish it.

And whatever you do, don't accept such an explanation from the guys who are actually running the show. BECAUSE THEY LIE!!!

Anyone else rememeber when replacing Rumsfeld with Gates was a wonderful thing because of Gates' frank, realistic assessment of the situation in Iraq? Anyone else remember the unanimous confirmation of Petreaus?

Patterico - In the Left's bastardization of language, quoting somebody verbatim is an attack or a smear.

Liberal Avenger, you don't have a leg to stand on.

Your party's House whip said it, now your party can own it.

Cheap shot, Patterico.

I can’t say I blame you, though, given the state of affairs your own party is in.

Accurate quotations are a "cheap shot"?

AJL - So you are proclaiming Gen. Petraeus a liar prior to his report even being issued?

Have fun at YKos. Shout down a soldier or two. Big fun !

The problem with a highly positive report is that it would follow in the long tradition of overly-rosy lies that the Administration has proffered from Day One. I suppose it would have been bad for the Democrats if the insurgency really were in its last throes when Darth Cheney said so. But it wasn't. The Administration's descriptions of Iraq have the accuracy of tabloid horoscopes, if that.

In those neighborhoods where our new forces are able to keep order, things are slightly better. In the parts of the country where we are now allied with Sunni tribes (basically, Saddam's cousins without Saddam's appreciation of secular vices), violence is directed at Al Qaeda in Iraq, but it's not easy to see what strategic goal is being advanced.

Rather than look for gotchas, you would do better to try to some up with a sensible, plausible explanation (that rules out Jim Rockford) for what we intend to do in Iraq and how the current tactics will accomplish it. Certainly with the Sunni bloc leaving the on-vacation Parliament there is little evidence our policy is effecting some political progress.

I'm at the YearlyKos convention, so I don't have too much more time to comment before my turn at the kitten-stomping room comes up.

Whether or not it was wise to say what he said, at least he was honest. Good news on the war = bad news for the Dems.

Moreover, it equals good news for Hillary, since she's been the most vocal of the current D candidates as far as (tepid) support of the war. Bad news for Ron Paul on the other side. Good news for Rudy, and very good news for Fred.

And dammit, good news on the war is good news for America.

I actually hope that they grow the stones to vote to de-fund the war, at least they would be being honest as to their intentions.

Oh JD, don't you have anything better to do than mentally masturbate? Political realities preclude this from being enacted, unless, Petraeus testifies that all is lost, and, by all accounts to date, that's not going to happen.
