“Deport the Criminals First” — Part Twelve of an Ongoing Series: Illegal Gangster Arrested 27 Times Without Deportation Before (Allegedly) Murdering 13-Year-Old

[“Deport the Criminals First” is a recurring feature on this blog, highlighting crimes committed by illegal immigrants — with a special focus on repeat offenders. I argue that, instead of arresting illegal immigrants who work hard for a living, we should use our limited immigration enforcement resources to target illegal immigrants who commit crimes in this country.]

A piece on the Chicago Tribune web site tells the story of what happens when government officials fail to Deport the Criminals First. (h/t Ed J.)

A Kenyan immigrant with an expired student visa was arrested 27 times before allegedly ordering a shooting that resulted in the death of 13-year-old Schanna Gayden.

schanna-gayden.jpg

Predictably, officials all passed the buck on who should have seen to it that he was deported:

Not us! said the Chicago Police Department. “We don’t ever ask about immigration status,” said spokeswoman Monique Bond. “We leave that up to the courts.”

Not us! said the Cook County state’s attorney’s office. “We don’t check,” said spokesman John Gorman. “That’s for [ICE] to do. We’re not involved.”

Not us! said ICE. “Law enforcement agencies can contact our Law Enforcement Support Center for timely and accurate information” 24 hours a day, Rusnok said. If “the person who is being inquired about is subject to removal, [ICE] can place a detainer with the Police Department ordering the department to hold the person … to allow ICE officials to take the person into custody and begin removal proceedings.”

I discuss it in more detail in this post at Hot Air.

  1. As the MSM often does stories about hard-working illegal alien workers and caught up in red tape — and honors high school students unable to get a scholarship for college because of their illegal immigration status … stories designed to arouse sympathy and promote amnesty…

Will the Tribune or the Los Angeles Times or the San Jose Mercury News be doing a feature story on the life and death of Schanna Gayden?

  2. this series should be required reading for all those “we’re a sanctuary city” people.

  3. At the risk of piling on, there’s this story:

    Pat R. (ee24b7)

  4. IMHO it’s time to change the language of political action, and start referring to elected officials who support sanctuary movements or cities as “Proponents of Murder” or something along those lines. This would be especially true for those running against incumbents who voted for sanctuary policies.

  5. horatio –
Normally I’d agree with you, but loaded language is the domain of ad hominem, just as political correctness is the domain of disingenuousness. Why reduce it to a sound bite? If you’re going to call a spade a spade, then call an elected official who supports sanctuary policies that allow criminals to remain in this country illegally…just that. “Proponents of Murder” is no better of a term than the “pro-life”/”pro-choice” dichotomy.

  6. “supports sanctuary policies that allow criminals to remain in this country illegally”

Because that’s an inconvenient mouthful, for one thing. Shorter is better, and focusing on some of the consequences is better, also.

  7. The Tacoma case mentioned by Pat R. is another distressing example of our government’s failure to protect us. God bless these children.

  8. Damn!!! That’s some mighty efficient buck passing. I guess we will have to start voting politicians out off office, who pretend to be obtuse about our joke of an immigration system.

  9. LarryD –
The problem is that soundbites lead to equivocation and further disingenuousness. While we’re at it, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander; Jesse Jackson could just as easily turn around and call all those gun shop owners “Proponents of Murder” because their policy of selling guns potentially allows murderers to obtain weapons. I’m sorry, but calling sanctuary officials “Proponents of Murder” is the kind of hand-waving shrieking rhetoric I expect out of a Kos Kid.

Maybe inconvenient mouthfuls are better when they, y’know, actually contain the unspun truth.

    Rick Wilcox (bb4b76)

  10. Rick–

Those who control the language control the debate. Jackson should be referred to as pro-rapist (same for all anti-gunners). Proponents of the INSANE War on Some Drugs, and the accompanying civil forfeiture laws should be referred to as “Junkies” now that they’re addicted to the cash.

For better or worse sound bites work.

  11. Horatio: by the same token, I suppose, people who oppose the state providing health insurance for the uninsured could be called “proponents of sickness and death”.

How does this type of rhetoric help do anything except get everyone to hate everyone who disagrees with them?

  12. Congratulations, Mwenda Murithi!…

You are the “Illegal Immigrant Criminal of the Week”! Let the mayor and aldermen of Chicago stand up and take a bow for you. Not only have you managed to harbor a known criminal (who has been arrested 26 TIMES!!!), but you allowed him to reach number…

  13. aphrael:

I think Horatio’s unwittingly brought up the main problem with soundbites in general.

Those who control the language control the debate.

Those who seek to control the language and control the debate prove that they aren’t interested in controlling the issue. Soundbites exist solely to influence perception, rather than actually doing anything. When we boil down analysis to short quips, we lose sight of the realities involved and instead bog ourselves down with vilifying “the other side”. It’s all just ad hom and spin.

  14. Horatio: by the same token, I suppose, people who oppose the state providing health insurance for the uninsured could be called “proponents of sickness and death”.

Actually, I’d call them “Taxpayer Advocates”

Welcome to the reality we call American Politics. Issues have nothing to do with anything – It’s all about power, who controls the pursestrings, and who can control (or choose not to control) the lives of others.

    horatio (564fb8)

  15. Horatio, I’ll leave the politics to the politicians. I’m more interested in discussing the problem and solutions, not in spinning “the other guy” into a murder-loving devil. Intellectual honesty and all that.

    Rick Wilcox (bb4b76)

  16. Horatio: by the same token, I suppose, people who oppose the state providing health insurance for the uninsured could be called “proponents of sickness and death”.

Heck, they already are. I remember when HillaryCare was being negotiated. Hillary called opponents of her plan “against health care.” They weren’t against health care, just against the government doing it. But nobody ever called her on her characterization.

So, this is perhaps not the best example to use.

Mr. Rusnok forgot to add, “Heck, we’ll deport an American citizen even faster, especially if they can’t read. They put a mark on our paperwork and we ship them to Mexico right away. And we don’t care what that liberal judge has to say about it either.”

  18. It starts with the politicians, so we should aim our message at them. By politicians, I mean anyone who gets elected.

The MSM wont help, and conservative radio, while good, does not get out to a diverse enough population. The internet is in the same boat.

We should go back to the basics. Print out some of the internet pages and pass them out to people.

Additionally, someone needs to finance newspaper advertising so every time we get an illegal criminal exposed like this we can publish the names of those who support amnesty.

    Davod (3392f5)

  19. Monique Bond essentially lied, not “passed the buck”. Mayor Daley (and she is nothing more than his puppet) went to court with INS over whether the Chicago police could be made to report illegal aliens to INS (now ICE). He needs the Spanish-speaking vote and he is not going to do anything that might remotely alienate a single one.

  20. Horatio, I’ll leave the politics to the politicians. I’m more interested in discussing the problem and solutions, not in spinning “the other guy” into a murder-loving devil. Intellectual honesty and all that.

By their actions, they are “murder-loving devils” despite their protestations to the contrary.

IMHO, this is a war for the very soul of the nation-state called the United States. The sanctuary folks don’t believe in nation-states, rather they are proponents of supra-national entities, thus borders are meaningless concepts to them.

    In any event, ’nuff said
Thanks to Patterico for hosting the site, and those who participate here.

  21. “Horatio, I’ll leave the politics to the politicians. I’m more interested in discussing the problem and solutions, not in spinning “the other guy” into a murder-loving devil. Intellectual honesty and all that.”

Now I know you are being dishonest.

The politicians do not want to do anything!

    Davod (3392f5)

  22. Since no politician dares call him or herself “pro-amnesty,” but acts that way privately to pander to voters, doesn’t it stand to reason we should call them that?

That controls the language, horatio, without alienating a whole bunch of centrists.

    Patricia (824fa1)

  23. I have no problem calling pro-amnesty folks just that – i.e. Kennedy, Bush, et. al…

Define centrists, and what that means relative to being pro-amnesty, and why should we be concerned if they’re alienated?

I’ll state again – we are at war with those who would kill us in the name of Islam, and with those that would destroy the sovereign integrity of the US over time. To quote Jim Hightower – “There’s nothing in the middle of the road but a yellow line and dead armadillos”.

    horatio (564fb8)

  24. Define centrists, and what that means relative to being pro-amnesty, and why should we be concerned if they’re alienated?

In this case, a centrist is one who would not call a politician “pro-murder” so they could elect someone who is not “pro-amnesty.”

    Patricia (824fa1)

  25. And here is the only type of story about immigrants the MSM will print: We’re so mean!

    Patricia (824fa1)

  26. Pathetic! And, so predictable. How many more innocents will have to die before we set this problem right?

All advocates and supporters of “Special Order-40/Sanctuary City” policy should be banned from public service for life.

  27. Sadly, Fox News reports that Zina Linnik (first mentioned by Pat R. in comment #3) has been found dead.

    DRJ (31d948)

  28. Is this the results of what those idiots supporting illegal imagration when they held those rediclous protests last year SCREW THEM ALL

    krazy kagu (85eb6b)

  29. Zina Linnik’s alleged killer is an illegal immigrant with a conviction for one crime already – AND he is registered to vote in Washington State!

    steve matlock (0fb51f)

  30. I wouldn’t be surprised to find Charles Manson registered to vote in WA State.
If trends continue, Gov. Christine’s pix will accompany all encyclopedia entries on voter fraud.
