Re: “potatoe”. Just a week before the Quayle story happened, I was playing the Australian edition of Trivial Pursuit™ and got the question “How is potato spelled in America?”. Now as far as I knew it was spelled the same way as it is on the card, but that obviously wasn’t the answer the publisher wanted, and the most likely of the four choices given was “potatoe”; and indeed when we turned over the card, that was given as the correct answer. I was rather puzzled by this, but was astounded a week later when Dan Quayle spelled it that way. So there you go; maybe Quayle had been playing Trivial Pursuit and put too much faith in its accuracy.

PS: I saw at least some news reports at the time claiming that this was in fact the way it’s spelled in Indiana. If those reports were right, then this goes down as yet another instance of False Quayle Dumbness Syndrome.

It made me smile to see this glaring spelling error on Hillary’s backdrop, and days later the National Spelling Bee took place…announcing its new champion, a homeschooled boy. Fun stuff.

In Spanish, “linda” also means pretty or beautiful. It could be that Rio Linda got it’s name because it was a beautiful river.

I almost forgot go to wizbang.com and read about how Hillary who along with her senate and congressional cronies were screeching at the top of their lungs how illegl and wrong it was for President Bush to wiretap phones. Yet ignores the fact that she( if the story pans out to be true) unlike Bush who said the only calls that would be monitored would be the ones concerning citizens talking Al Quada would be guilty of listening in on tape recorded phone calls from her opponants in order to further her on to her White House dreams.

actually, the closest analogue is dan quayle “potatoe”, and i’d take hillary over him, the guy was a stone moron.

if we’re gonna reopen the causes of 9/11 and the columbia disaster in the commentspace, i want to look at the death of president warren gamaliel harding. i have heard from several different folks over the years that he was poisoned.
