In response to a history of unflattering coverage, billionaire David Geffen entered a bid to buy the LA Times. He assures readers that his desire to end the coverage of his private takeover of a public beach has nothing to do with his bid.

Ethical issues aside, one problem with having guest editors is that it outsources a function the opinion editor is presumably paid to perform.

This week’s Current section will be edited by Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe. Full disclosure: President Mugabe is a ruthless dictator who has oppressed his people and imprisoned and killed his enemies. During his decades in power he has turned Zimbabwe from a prosperous nation and “the breadbasket of southern Africa” into a poverty-stricken police state. It is hoped that President Mugabe will be a more centrist influence on the newspaper.
