For Letterman Fans: RIP Larry “Bud” Melman

Larry “Bud” Melman is dead.

I was a huge Letterman fan in college, though I haven’t watched Letterman in at least 10 years.

Here is Larry “Bud” Melman passing out hot towels at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Nobody else has ever equalled his technique with a handheld microphone.

RIP.

  1. Letterman jumped the shark when he stopped having Melman on each week. He was classic.

  2. My favorite part of Melman was how he NEVER adlibed. He held to the skit’s script 100%. It made barely funny stuff side splitting…

  3. The video was absolutely WONDERFUL.

  4. I am sure everyone remembers moment of sheer hilarity when your stomach hurt from laughing so hard and your head got light. Such a moment was when DeForest as Melman did a skit in which he was a census taker. He couldn’t read the cue cards, and at one point, he held a sign upside down, totally oblivious to what he had done that was so funny. They should make a DVD of “The Best of Bud” as a fundraiser for his drug treatment center. But they won’t. It’s a shame.

Not as much a shame as what’s happened to Letterman, though. I haven’t watched him on a regular basis since the normal Presidential humor took on a nasty edge unheard of even in the days of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The tipping point was a gag about Kim Jong Il’s reluctance to engage in multi-party talks after his ballyhooed missile tests. Kim, so the joke went, would only talk if Bush would wear his Coke-bottle glasses for months on end (a Photoshopped Bush with Kim’s specs was shown on screen). The problem is that not only was that it wasn’t funny, it was that the voiceover for the bit had Alan Kalter somehow calling the President of the United States “bitch,” as in ‘Wear ’em for three months, bitch!’ That was it for me — the last time I made a point of it to watch Late Show was when Jerry Seinfeld talked with Michael Richards via satellite. (Was THAT ever weird.)

I switched to Jimmy Kimmel, who is getting better and better. Guillermo is like a Hispanic DeForest. Uncle Frank is like a more spry DeForest. How he ever scored Aunt Chippy is a mystery to me. If I was twenty years older…

  5. Gotta love that one where Larry “Bud” Melman did a Roy Orbison impersonation. 🙂

  6. I loved the American Gladiator bit…
