Excellent Alfred Brendel Review at . . . at . . . I Can’t Say It

It feels odd to be linking the “Martini Republic” web site, but it has quite a good review of the recent Alfred Brendel concert at Disney Hall. Read the review here. Judging from the description and pictures, the reviewer was sitting not very far from where the divine Mrs. P. and I sat Tuesday night. Nice job on the review. It pretty much captures the evening as I experienced it. I meant to write a review myself, but this one is better than I could have done anyway.

  1. Patrick, something I hope people on both sides of the national political fence can realize is that someone who is 80% your friend and 20% your nemesis can still be your friend most of the time. Thanks for linking the review; we’ve read of many of your own classical excursions with much interest.

At our blog, we’re lucky to have Rodney, whom I’ve known for about twenty years. He’s reviewed a lot lately, and I like his reviews as much as anyone’s in town! He’s also not as bothered by the Disney Hall as I am, and he typically gets better seats, which makes an enormous difference there, to me.

I recently sat in three different places for the recent Brahms symphonies cycle (I saw 4 and 2 twice) and heard three different kinds of concerts: very good, somewhat bad, and really really ugly. Location, location, location for me remains the name of the game at the Disney Hall; the orchestra rarely lets us down, but the Hall often does.

  2. I’ve got Brendel playing the Impromptus as part of a 3 CD set. Recorded in 1962. Humbling to think that he was already a master musician that far back. My parents didn’t buy me my first LP, and the half-toy phonograph to play it on, until two years later. (Mitch Miller plays the Fifty Great Composer. What do you get for a five year old kid?)

A (much younger) cyberfriend is a music student there, and not only gets to hear Brendel play, but a masterclass with him. If he posts a write up, I’ll pass the link on to you.

  3. By the way, Mitch Miller is still very much with us. He’s 95.

  5. Dear Patrick: We’ve never met, but it was nice to see the link to your site at my own Martini Republic’s morning page. Glad you appreciated the review. With someone of Brendel’s stature, such scribblings by us mere mortals is a pleasure to put together. Look forward to meeting you some day. Best, Rodney

  6. Here’s the link I promised, only (apparently) he was too blotto to actually say anything about Brendel.
