Saddam Not to Be Hanged Within a Month?

This Hot Air post suggests that Saddam may be hanged within the next three days — or, maybe, not even within the next thirty. There appears to be some confusion regarding the interpretation of the relevant statute. Allah says: “The Iraqi government can’t agree on anything else. Why should they agree on killing Saddam?”

  1. Watch him swing! (But when?)…

Iraqis to videotape Saddam execution; Update: Saddam may not hang within 30 days?Allahpundit (H/T: Patterico)I’m tired, folks. Just go read it….

  2. enough of this empty talk, let’s get a bet on!
i propose that patterico establish a pool with 14 options, december06 (which is waning fast), one each for the months of 2007, and the long field (he’s still alive when the ball drops in times square at the end of 2007). saddam’s death by any means concludes the event, whether hanging, assassination, natural causes or goering-style suicide. ten bucks a ticket, winning bettors divide pool after patterico takes out 10% to compensate him for his time. i’m picking the long field.

  3. I have a hunch he won’t see 2007.

  4. I fully expect Stephen Reinhardt to issue an order Friday preventing the US from handing Saddam over to the Iraqis. Never mind how or why, it’s just something he’d do.

  5. The Dead Pool players have been waiting all year — or at least 12 of them have been. They’ve already got money on it…

I actually hope he makes it to Monday, as I’m currently 5th and suspect that I’ll drop a few places if he hangs before then.

  6. I hope he makes it to 2007… sick of dealing with DP. 😉

  7. Two of my favorite quotes from “eavy Metal” apply to Saddam’s situation:

    – To defend: this is the pact. But when life loses its meaning and is taken for naught, then the pact is to avenge!

    – Hanover Fiste “He’s nothing but a low-down, double-dealing, backstabbing, larcenous perverted worm! Hanging’s too good for him. Burning’s too good for him! He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive!”

  8. Did you notice, though, that the Iraqi appeals court sent back to the trial court the case of Saddam’s codefendant who got only a life sentence? The appellate court was quoted in press accounts as “demanding” a death sentence for that codefendant too.

That couldn’t happen under American law. But they’re not in America, and it wasn’t clearly improper under American law until the late 1970s or early 1980s (if I recall correctly).

  9. Beldar,

Good point. That was an interesting deviation from American law and it would certainly complicate a defendant’s decision whether to appeal from a life sentence. Did you get the impression that, under Iraqi law, the State can appeal even if the defendant does not?

  10. word out of iraq this morning from an iraqi judge with a ticket to the execution: it’s gonna be saturday. the short fielders in the death pool must have brightened up over that, but he ain’t dead yet. seems to be a controversy over whether he’s still in american custody or not.

if it goes down like that, i would have lost my long field bet. i don’t always win but i love to play. fundamentally, i don’t give a damn whether they hang him or not, but if they do, i hope the video makes it to youtube. my only regret is that more american soldiers will die on account of this, hope they stay in their bases over the weekend and let the iraqis take it out on each other.
