Rago: Yawn

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:30 pm

Seems like a lot of people are commenting on Joseph Rago’s anti-blog rant. I didn’t really think it was much worth commenting on. Did he say a single original thing?

  1. Are you kidding? His first sentence was so accurate that I stopped reading after I read it:

Blogs are very important these days.

  2. What Mr. Rago may be trying to say is: if blogs are to become worthwhile, they must misuse obsolete words like “vastation.” Yeah, that’s what he’s saying. 🙂

Seriously, Rago does have a point: many blogs don’t have much worthwhile to say. I’m sure he’s not referring to Patterico’s Pontifications (or confirmthem).

  3. i’m astonished that the words “logorrheic” and “irony” could appear in the same sentence in a piece like this.
isn’t the wsj supposed to be a free-market advocate?

  4. The editorial staff at the WSJ is pro-free market, the reporters, not so much.

Even so, this is more an issue of upstarts threating the established. Blogs can certainly replace the editorial commentary and pundits, so Rago is professionally threatened. Disparaging the competition is a natural, if ineffective, response.

  5. I guess Rago either resents or doesn’t get along with James Taranto.

  7. I’m buried in holiday stress and don’t have the brainpower to post on my own blog(s). So I’ll just share what would have been my whole post here:

    “Commonplace book? Instantaneity? VALORIZES?!

This note should also have appeared from his editor before that piece of idiocy went to press.

  8. PS: DRJ, hahahaha.
