The None-Too-Savvy Mel Martinez Is the New RNC Chair

Mel Martinez is the new RNC Chair. Longtime readers will remember Martinez as the subject of my post titled Mel Martinez: Dumber Than a Bag of Hammers — Or Lying? He’s the guy who took the idiot Schiavo “talking points” memo and gave it to Tom Harkin. Here’s hoping he’s less clumsy in his new position.

  1. As I said elsewhere, not only is it Mel Martinez, he’s not leaving the Senate? Are they trying to provoke a “screw the GOP” reaction from conservatives?

The Republican Party was so successful in this last election, that they don’t even need a full time chairman?

You know, Howard Dean is looking more and more brilliant by comparison each day.

In my country, Canada, we had a “Progressive Conservative” Party (that really was the name) that betrayed its base, got decimated, we sat in the electoral wilderness for over a decade, and now under the renewed leadership of Stephen Harper the “Conservative Party” is governing.

Maybe there is a better way…

    Just saying.

RedState.org’s Mel Martinez piece is good reading.

  2. Shouldn’t you have said the “Schiavo idiotic talking-points memo” … unless you meant to call Terri Schiavo an idiot and I don’t think you did.

  3. I guess they didn’t lose badly enough. The point about the Progressive Conservatives is well taken: they went from the majority to maybe 2 seats in one election. What happened to Michael Steele?

  4. Could it possibly be that Bush IS an idiot?

  5. You do have a way with titles, Patterico.

  6. Whose party? Whose chairman?…

It’s as simple as this folks: Its this the Republican Party or the Karl Rove Party? Add me to the long, long list of conservative bloggers saying, “Hell, no” to Mel Martinez. We want Michael Steele for RNC Chairman, and we’re not going to take Bone…

  7. I just came over to link to a Redstate piece and saw that Cristoph did in the first entry. I see a meme forming about this guy.

Whatever, leading the Republican party can’t be that hard; it’s only a part-time job.

  8. Open Border Chairman Martinez to lead GOP?

The GOP base was sent a shock wave by picking a pro-amnesty Mel Martinez as the Republican Party Chairman. It seems clear now, that President Bush will push his open border agenda with the help of Nancy Pelosi lead Congress. Mel Martinez job will be to control GOP Party decent from Congress, with the promise of new Hispanic voters.

    Palm Beach Post

Signaling a new direction for the Republican Party, which had heavy losses in the Hispanic community in last week’s elections, Florida Sen. Mel Martinez appeared ready Monday to become the party’s new general chairman while retaining his Senate seat.

Martinez thrust himself into the contentious debate over immigration, helping craft the Senate version of a comprehensive immigration bill that would offer a route to eventual citizenship for longtime illegal residents while requiring others to leave the U.S.

Michele Waslin, director of immigration policy at the National Council of La Raza, is hopeful Martinez and his GOP allies will make the right moves.

Is the GOP selling-out the Base with pushing an open border agenda? Does anyone think that the GOP lost the election due to the immigration issue?

  9. John Konop asked, “Does anyone think that the GOP lost the election due to the immigration issue?”

Yes, I do, although not exclusively. The GOP’s failures were many, but illegal immigration was a major factor.

If the GOP had taken border security seriously, vigorously supported the construction of an effective physical barrier, and openly rejected any move toward an amnesty or guest worker program until after the border was secure, I believe the public would have rewarded them with millions more votes.

I can’t say with any confidence it would have kept the GOP in the majority, but it sure would have given them one heck of a fighting chance.

  10. Mr Konop asked:

Is the GOP selling-out the Base with pushing an open border agenda? Does anyone think that the GOP lost the election due to the immigration issue?

    (Raising hand here.)

In Pennsylvania, we lost four Republican incumbents, the most of any state. Our Republicans were on the air, constantly, running ads telling us how Bob Casey (now Senator-elect Casey) supported amnesty, how Pat Murphy (now Representative-elect Murphy) supported open borders and rewarding illegal immigrants, and how Joe Sestak (now Representative-elect Sestak) wasn’t willing to secure the borders.

We lost a big chunk of the Hispanic vote in playing on a tough stance on illegal immigration, and didn’t seem to pick up enough Democrats and independents to win without them.

But Rick Santorum and Mike Fitzpatrick and Curt Weldon came in with strong second-place finishes! Anyone care to guess what second place in an election gets you?

  11. Ok, I guess so many people think that are “Native Americas” their ancestors didn’t arrive as immigrants or “illegal” to this country. WHO CARES HISPANICS AREN’T TRYING TO BLOW UP OUR COUNTRY!! So to all the “racist” Republicans go join the “Whining Democrats” I hope Senator Martinez runs for the white house, he has my vote!!!

  12. One more thing bring, all CUBANS you want into this country because at least they know how to vote in Miami!!

    fsuchick (ee8c41)

  13. The illegal aliens, predominately from Mexico will vote overwhelmingly Democrat if given citizenship, despite who is responsible for their amnesty. Most would vote socialist if that was an option. That’s why communist groups are involved with illegal alien marches and such. They get responsiveness from the crowd.

Part of the reason it is skewed that way is because they are here with disregard for our laws. They’ve been skewed towards those who have a sense of ‘entitlement’, already. That’s a perfect audience for Democrats.

But even if it would swing them to be Conservatives for life, it would still be wrong.

  14. They let you into FSU with writing like that?

  15. Why not? It’s an OK institution, I suppose, but Harvard it ain’t.

  16. What’s wrong with Comment #12? It’s poetical.

    In Miami!

(Oh, ok. I see it. The extra exclamation mark.)

  17. Ms. FSU I am Cuban, I say right on. We have been voting Republican for a long time. “Cuban Jewish that is.” But I went to UM, but the girls at FSU rock!

  18. President Sonny Perdue?

Clinton, Romney, McCain, Giuliani, Obama, Frist, Gingrich, Gore, Kerry, Rice, Edwards, Pataki, Biden… Like it or not, the 2008 presidential race is officially underway. What’s missing is a clear front-runner for the Republican nomination.

Georgia governor Sonny Perdue is, perhaps, the GOP’s best hope of maintaining control of the White House.

Republicans are Mad about Spending and Immigration

Perdue balanced the budget in Georgia, which insulates him from the criticisms that face any candidate that comes from our irresponsible, deficit-swelling congress.

Perdue passed the toughest immigration legislation in the country, while Washington did nothing.

Independents are Mad about the Iraq and Trade

Since Perdue wasn’t in Washington during the vote to authorize the Iraq war, he can approach it with an open mind and no political baggage.

Regarding trade reform, Perdue can reach out to natural allies like Gingrey, Norwood, Deal, and Westmorland, all of whom have been outspoken about cracking down on Chinese trade abuses (especially regarding child and slave labor).

Perdue was the GOP’s Only Bright Light in the Mid-Term Election

With Perdue at the top of the ticket, Georgia Republicans picked up both the Lt. Governor and Sectary of State offices and expanded the Republican majority in the statehouse. Republicans in the rest of the country took a “thumpin.”

And there’s plenty for the media to like too. Perdue is a veteran, a veterinarian, father of four, foster parent of eight, and was a walk-on quarterback at the University of Georgia. He also has a small role in the upcoming Matthew McConaughey football movie “We Are Marshall”.

I challenge anyone looking at the current list of GOP hopefuls to name a stronger candidate than Governor Sonny Perdue.

    John Konop (b33e09)

  19. Konop asked for stronger candidates than Governor Sonny Perdue. His own listing pretty much covers the field, and it should be noted does not include the gentleman from Georgia.

“Clinton, Romney, McCain, Giuliani, Obama, Frist, Gingrich, Gore, Kerry, Rice, Edwards, Pataki, Biden…”

Also, there may be some residual reluctance to consider a favorite son from Georgia, following the disastrous presidency of the Athens peanut farmer, Jimmy Carter.

I confess to knowing very little about Sonny Perdue, unless he’s a member of the fried chicken Predues who run a chain of fast food restaurants in the South, and who are known to cook up a pretty darn good chicken, and passable biscuits.

  20. Interesting side note: did you know that Mel Martinez is one half of the comedy duo of HagelMartinez? One of their best bits was an immigration plan that would invite 20 to 60 or more million new legal immigrants over 20 years plus millions of new illegal aliens. Plus, they had a lot of fun joking about all the outrageous loopholes in their “bill”.

    What? That was real legislation?

As for the Communist groups #13 mentions, it gets even worse: some of the march organizers have links to foreign governments and a foreign political party. See the link for more on those new “GOP voters”.
