  1. Never have so many Senators seen their future Presidential campaigns sink like the Titantic: Frist, Allen, McCain, and of course, now the spotlight will be on Slow-Joe Biden, and the other fawning Princes in the Dem party. BTW, did you hear Christopher Hitchens on Hugh’s show and his dismissal of the new Majority Leader?

  2. Everyone but McCain. The others’ either lost their seats or are associated with the Senate’s failure.

McCain has a record of working with the current victors and, perversely, is tacking hard right to buff up or create his conservative primary-winning credentials.

    Your analysis was 2/3 right.

  4. One thing that will be fun is to see to what degree, if any, the Democrat leadership will be able to squelch the lunatic moonbat nutroot fringe.

One school of thought is that they won’t be able to. They’ve let these nutshave free rein for too long. They are going to be making their demands. They are going to want red meat, as they say.

But another view is that now that the Democrats have some power the fringe will quiet down.

    It’s going to be interesting.

  5. Zeb: I think the leadership is quite aware that in order to remain in control of the legislature, they need to be mdoerate, not leftist.

The question is whether or not they can keep the leftists in line. One thing they could do is, after running through moderate proposals successfully, let the leftists propose the legislation of their dreams and then vote it down; done well, that could be an enormously successful tactic.

  6. Virginia law MANDATES a recount so Webb’s victory is not due to be certified, if at all, until 11/27/06. I wouldn’t surrender the keys to the kingdom just yet guys!

I predict now that under new, revitalized leadership, the Republicans will come roaring back in 2008 – with their resurgence fueled by the Dems’ inability to rein in the nutroots that have infected and co-opted far too many of the Dems’ number!

  7. We’ll know if Dems are actually serious about Congressional oversight, rather than smearing GWB’s administration, if they set about putting their own house in order first. Harry Reid is deeply implicated in real estate shenanigans around Las Vegas.

If Dems want their oversight initiatives to have any legitimacy, they might want to demonstrate some interest in looking into Reid’s curious land deals.

If he’s clean, then he gets out from under a cloud and can lead the Senate without the stigma of corruption tainting his efforts. If he’s dirty, and Dems expose him, they prove they’re more interested in good government than they are in perpetuating a culture of corruption.

  8. They’re not going to investigate Reid; he’s the leader who led them to victory.

My hope is that they kick out Hastings, though.

  9. Virginia law MANDATES a recount

No, it doesn’t. Allen is entitled to a recount if he wants one, but the word on the street is that he doesn’t want one – and the odds of prevailing are remote even if he did.

Stick a fork in the Republican Senate. It’s done.

  10. Also:

many jurisdictions, including California, take several weeks before releasing official results; the same-night results are semi-official. This allows time to verify and count provisional ballots, do the 1% recount to sanity check the election machines, etc.

This is completely normal, and I can’t remember the results of an election anywhere being changed by this process, which is why we all treat the semi-official results as finishing things off.

So: you’re probably right that there will be no official certification until November 27, but that’s a formality only.
