That Must Have Been Good Vodka They Offered Him, Because I’m Pretty Sure He’s a Gin and Tonic Guy . . .
Did Sen. Tedward “Melonhead” Kennedy attempt to collaborate with the Soviets during the Cold War, with the goal of unseating an American president? It sure looks that way. (Thanks to Christoph.)

Thanks for the HT, Patterico, although all credit goes of course to Brian of Hot Air and especially author, Paul Kengor.
Since it’s on topic, I’m just going to repeat my [very slightly edited] earlier comment under this thread:

Whoa, horrible edit… I meant to say in the one nonsense sentence: It really bummed out some of my days as a current affairs and history-intrigued nerdy kid that there might be, with nothing more than a siren as warning, nukes destroying myself and all my friends. So since this did affect my way of looking at the world, I take especially great offense to Ted Kennedy colluding traitorously with Yuri Andropov during a time of (cold) war that threatened to get several tens of thousands degrees hot in microseconds.

Ted’s preferred libation is Chivas Regal, which was the top shelf blended Scotch whiskey at most bars before the invasion of the single malts. With his money, he could afford the really good stuff, but quality has never been what Teddy was about.
His act was despicable, but the news is neither very surprising - Kennedy and other liberal Democrats had been working the Kremlin’s will for years with the nuclear freeze and other nonsense, and everybody knew it, which is why Reagan won 49 states in 1984.
My understanding is that the courts have always required the “overt act” of treason to be a material one. The mere offer to conspire with a foreign government could be illegal, but isn’t “treason” by itself. Some action to further the conspiracy would be needed for such a charge.

The Soviets at Wikipedia are kind of funny. I placed this initial entry:
They first removed it (but in less than the 18-minutes I predicted) because I used Hot Air as a source, before I *resourced* it to Cybercast, then they changed it to this
… exactly as I predicted: A whitewashed bit of fluff.

If this memo authenticates…WOW! However it pans out, I want to express my gratitude for the effort to authenticate. (Unlike Rathergate et al….)
Even if it were to be true, I have no faith that anything could come of it. I mean Foley and Studds are great examples. One only talked about sex with underage boys, the other did it.

In my more paranoid moments, I have suspected Bill Clinton of being a “Manchurian Candidate” or “Little Nikita” and Hillary of being his controller (a la Angela Lansbury to Lawrence Harvey in the first movie).

Welcome, Dimitrious, and I am glad you are proud of your new country.
I’m not sure if Patterico is Greek, though. He’s said that Patterico is something his dad used to call him as a kid.
No one is allowed, ever, to know his real name unless they google “Patterico” and “real name”.

So this is what its come to. Plotting with a foreign government to usurp the president. I await the repudiation or validation of the information to make a judgment.
The problem is that I can all too easily believe it. Is that about me or Kennedy?
