Patterico's Pontifications

That Must Have Been Good Vodka They Offered Him, Because I’m Pretty Sure He’s a Gin and Tonic Guy . . .

Did Sen. Tedward “Melonhead” Kennedy attempt to collaborate with the Soviets during the Cold War, with the goal of unseating an American president? It sure looks that way. (Thanks to Christoph.)

  1. Thanks for the HT, Patterico, although all credit goes of course to Brian of Hot Air and especially author, Paul Kengor.

    Since it’s on topic, I’m just going to repeat my [very slightly edited] earlier comment under this thread:

    I’m just shocked.

    And Kennedy’s don’t shock me easily.

    This man should spend his last breath behind bars. If the Bush White House doesn’t prosecute him, then he’s too weak for the job.

    This is unreal. The U.S.A. and my country, for f’ sakes, were always within 30-minutes or less of Soviet nuclear warheads raining down on us. It really bummed out some of my days as a good. And it wasn’t called the cold war for nothing.

    And they were trying to defeat this president as Mary Katherine Ham so rightly pointed out.

  2. Whoa, horrible edit… I meant to say in the one nonsense sentence: It really bummed out some of my days as a current affairs and history-intrigued nerdy kid that there might be, with nothing more than a siren as warning, nukes destroying myself and all my friends. So since this did affect my way of looking at the world, I take especially great offense to Ted Kennedy colluding traitorously with Yuri Andropov during a time of (cold) war that threatened to get several tens of thousands degrees hot in microseconds.

  3. Flopping Aces post is a must read analysis. Here’s a taste.

    Kennedy needs to resign NOW! This is treason folks.

    Article III, Section 3, Paragraph 1, of the Constitution of the United States:
    “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or, in adhering to their Enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”
    The “aid and comfort” prong of treason has been interpreted by SCOTUS as requiring proof of four elements:
    1. an intent to betray the United States (which can be inferred from);
    2. an overt act;
    3. witnessed by two people; and
    4. that provides aid and comfort to an enemy of the United States.

  4. Ted’s preferred libation is Chivas Regal, which was the top shelf blended Scotch whiskey at most bars before the invasion of the single malts. With his money, he could afford the really good stuff, but quality has never been what Teddy was about.

    His act was despicable, but the news is neither very surprising – Kennedy and other liberal Democrats had been working the Kremlin’s will for years with the nuclear freeze and other nonsense, and everybody knew it, which is why Reagan won 49 states in 1984.

    My understanding is that the courts have always required the “overt act” of treason to be a material one. The mere offer to conspire with a foreign government could be illegal, but isn’t “treason” by itself. Some action to further the conspiracy would be needed for such a charge.

  6. The Soviets at Wikipedia are kind of funny. I placed this initial entry:

    The KGB Letter and Allegations of TreasonCybercast News Service others reported on October 20, 2006 that in 1983 Kennedy (along with former Senator John Tunney, both Democrats) wrote a memo to former KGB Chairman and then current General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov. This memo offered to collaborate with the USSR’s political and military leadership to conduct a public relations campaign to oust Ronald Reagan as President of the United States during the 1984 general election. [1]

    At that time the Soviet Union was engaged in cold war with the United States and was widely considered to be the USA’s main enemy and rival for power in the world. Each country was also in possession of a vast arsenal of nuclear weapons and other weapon systems such as surface naval ships, ballistic missile submarines, strategic nuclear bombers, land based atomic canons, and cruise missiles.

    In the event of a hot war, initial nuclear warheads would have landed on U.S. soil within 5-minutes of hostilities from Soviet SLBM submarines and in large numbers from ICBMs within 30-minutes. Opposing the Soviet Union and attempting to defeat Soviet Communism, which Ronald Reagan helped accomplished in his subsequent presidential term, was official U.S. foreign policy.

    Because of this, several bloggers and commentators consider Ted Kennedy’s actions to be treason.

    Article III, Section 3, Paragraph 1, of the Constitution of the United States: “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or, in adhering to their Enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” The “aid and comfort” prong of treason has been interpreted by the Supreme Court of the United States as requiring proof of four elements: 1) an intent to betray the United States (which can be inferred from); 2) an overt act; 3) witnessed by two people; and 4) that provides aid and comfort to an enemy of the United States.

    However, not everyone shares the belief that Kennedy should be held criminally responsible for this act.

    They first removed it (but in less than the 18-minutes I predicted) because I used Hot Air as a source, before I *resourced* it to Cybercast, then they changed it to this

    Memo to Andropov

    Paul Kengor, a political science professor at Grove City College, has alleged that in 1983 Kennedy (along with former Senator John Tunney, wrote a memo to Yuri Andropov, the leader of the Soviet Union, offering public relations advice. [1]

    … exactly as I predicted: A whitewashed bit of fluff.

  8. If this memo authenticates…WOW! However it pans out, I want to express my gratitude for the effort to authenticate. (Unlike Rathergate et al….)
    Even if it were to be true, I have no faith that anything could come of it. I mean Foley and Studds are great examples. One only talked about sex with underage boys, the other did it.

  13. Delving Deeper Into The KGB Files…

    We need verification from other sources, and time has already taken a toll on those who might shed more light on the matter. Andropov is dead as is Chebrikov. However, Chebrikov was no stranger to political intrigue and pentrating US national securit…..

    The problem is that I can all too easily believe it. Is that about me or Kennedy?
