Two Pieces of Good News: Killer Dies; Helen Thomas Put in her Place by Tony Snow

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:28 am

Allah reports that the guy who killed Pfcs Menchaca and Tucker has been killed.

What would “the Hezbollah view” on this be? Ask Helen Thomas.

I don’t miss Scott McClellan one bit.

  1. It would be good news that the person who killed two Americans was killed, if it weren’t for the fact that, as your linked article states, another American was killed in the clash.

As for Snow “puting Helen Thomas in her place”, I disagree. I think that calling the asking of her question “the Hezballah view” was reprehensible. She was refering to the AP report that the US had blocked a UN resolution calling for Israel to halt it’s hostilities. The AP story is here:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060713/ap_on_re_mi_ea/un_israel_gaza&printer=1;_ylt=AtEtoYIsY8yf2mq.otdf8icUewgF;_ylu=X3oDMTA3MXN1bHE0BHNlYwN0bWE

[I’m somewhat of a novice in the blogosphere, so forgive me if I don’t know how to create a link. Any instuction would be appreciated.]

Thomas has been in the White House Press Corp for many, many years, and the fact that she is the only one who asks real questions of the administration [think Jeff Gannon] should be respected.

    MplsDog (1fc1a2)

  2. I’ll go on to say that I am not supporting Hezballah in this conflict. Firing rockets into a civilian area is certainly terrorism. My point was only that Helen Thomas raised a valid question that should’ve been answered honestly.

    MplsDog (1fc1a2)

  3. I think it would have been better the other way around. Ha! I condemn me.

    Dan Collins (208fbe)

  4. I categorically condemn comments like Dan Collins’ above.

Helen Thomas is such an ass. I wonder if she thinks she looks smart in exchanges like that or if she thinks she won that round.

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  5. Let’s see,
Israel pulls out of the disputed territories.
Palistine holds elections in which terrorists are elected. And therefore attacks resume ,DESPITE getting what they (the palistinians) wanted.
Lebenon becomes essentially pre-hitler germany and is taken over by the 21st century version of Nazism-Hezbollah who then kidnaps Israel nationals AND attacks Israel. And Israel is supposed to roll over and take it up the butt?
The UN votes against Israel every time because it’s easier to piss off one country as opposed to 7. Gutless UN resolutions are not worth the paper they are written on.

  6. Helen Thomas is SUCH a mallet-head.

    Federal Dog (9afd6c)

  7. Will Rogers said it best. “I never met a man I wouldn’t condemn.”

    corvan (3fbd10)

  8. Or was that “didn’t” condemn? Either way, you get the idea. This thread needs more condemnations. A little cowbell wouldn’t hurt either.

    corvan (3fbd10)

  9. Helen was “put in her place?” You’re going to call peace a “Hezbollah view?” What a terrible thing a cease-fire would be, eh? And Snow’s comment was just a cheap shot. You can’t get your fill of killing, can you?

I don’t even care who started it this time – hell, they’ve been killing each other over there for eons. My view makes me think of Bill Cosby when he talks about children: “Parents aren’t interested in justice! They want QUIET!” Well, I just want the bloodshed to stop. I know; what a terrible person I am.

    Psyberian (dd13d6)

  10. A ceasefire would only allow the state sponsored terrorists to regroup/escape. So, yeah, it sucks big time.

    sam (fd544b)

  11. Interesting, I’m beginning to see a line of thought emerging here. There are those who do not support terrorism, but simply oppose all those who oppose terrorism. Fortunately they do it in the name of peace. Now back to the condemnations, and the cowbell.

    corvan (3fbd10)

  12. You can’t get your fill of killing, can you?

Yeah, that’s it. Not enough killing.

I don’t even care who started it this time…

Even if it is a terrorist group at odds with the government whose territory it’s initiating hostilities from. Just the same as a soverign nation defending itself from a renegade group from a neigboring country. No difference, it doesn’t matter a bit.

You’ll make a great dhimmi, Psyberian.

    Pablo (efa871)

  13. I just want the bloodshed to stop.

NIMBY. Where back yard = television.
Look, we would all like for the bloodshed to stop. Lincoln wanted the bloodshed to stop. Do we want to let Hezbollah off the hook and go back to continuous low-level bloodshed? Does Hamas want peace with Israel? Do the Islamists want peace with Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, Shinto, Confucians, animists, Wiccans?

    Dan Collins (208fbe)

  14. On June 25 in an unprovoked attack three Palestinian teams infiltrate Israel through tunnels dug near Gaza, attack a border outpost, kill two, wound four, and kidnap one soldier manning the station.

Additional kidnappings ensue. Intelligence reports indicate, Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas, has ordered the kidnappings.

On Wednesday July 12th, in an apparent internal battle for political control, Hezbollah gets in the act with a cross border incursion from Lebanon into Israel, killing three soldiers and kidnapping two others. Hezbolah’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, calls the abductions “our natural, only and logical right.”

Israel is now under attack from both Gaza and Lebanon. Hezbollah begins shelling Israeli cities killing scores of civilians and demonstrating the ability to strike farther inside Israel than ever before. Israel conducts airstrikes to destroy Hezbollah bases and rocket launchers in the border area from which the attacks originate.

On July 18 Helen Thomas asks the White House Press Secretary:

“The United Staes is not that helpful. We could have stopped bombardment of Lebanon, we have that much control…with uh, the Israelis. we have collective punishment of Lebanon and Palestine…and its happening and that’s the perception of the United States.”

    Which draws the reply:

“Well thank you for the Hezbolah view.”

Patterico blogs on how silly Thomas is.

Which draws this comment from psyberian:

“Helen was “put in her place?” You’re going to call peace a “Hezbollah view?” What a terrible thing a cease-fire would be, eh? And Snow’s comment was just a cheap shot. You can’t get your fill of killing, can you?”

Which makes one wonder. If psyberian’s neighborhood was being shelled with rockets, if he was cowering in a bomb shelter, looking on as his neighbor’s houses burn and they mourn their dead children, would he think that was peaceful?

Or would he expect his government to defend him against unprovoked attacks against civilians by terrorists?

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  15. Dwilkers, that’s absurd. You talk as if there has been no retaliation from Israel whatsoever. And surely you know that that ain’t so.

How long will it be before Hezbollah’s in their “last throes?”

Yeah, we can fix ‘em. Look at all the good we’ve done in Iraq. No, no bloodshed there…

    Psyberian (dd13d6)

  16. And Psyberian adds to his thesis. “Terrorism is bad. Let’s surrender to it.”

    corvan (3fbd10)

  17. “Yeah, we can fix ‘em. Look at all the good we’ve done in Iraq. No, no bloodshed there…”

Thomas was arguing we should “do something”. It seems to me your comment indicates you know the same thing I do: there’s nothing we can do about this.

Thus Helen Thomas is full of crap blaming the White House for it, no? Seems obvious to me.

The US isn’t responsible for everything in the world every moment of every day. We’ve got our hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thomas is an idiot psyberian. Her statement – I won’t justify it by describing it as a question – was asinine. All she does is harrass the spokesman. Frankly, if anything she’s counterproductive – she makes it easier for them to dodge. With Thomas there behaving so damn stupidly they can use her as a foil.

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  18. I also condemn this post by Dan Collins over at Xrlq. I suppose he thinks its funny – a “joke”.

I find it deeply offensive and I’m sure all right thinking people agree.

    Dwilkers (a1687a)

  19. “You can’t get your fill of killing, can you?”

Right. Killing is so IN now in Lebanon. George Orwell had it right and you might think about this for a nanosecond: “There is no need to have long wars. All that is needed for short wars is surrender.”

Israel can end terrorism immediately. All they have to do is walk west.

    Mike K (416363)

  20. Just to be on the safe side I’ll condemn Dwilkers, Mother Teresa and Captain Kangaroo as well. I’m still thinking about Mr. Greenjeans.

    corvan (3fbd10)

  21. Tony Snow needs a button on his podium which lowers a cone of silence from the ceiling; the cone descends and contains Helen Thomas’ noises. I can’t stand how she incessantly interrupts Tony’s answers.

  22. God, I love Helen Thomas! She keeps Tony Snow from actually having to deal with real questions.

  23. What a terrible thing a cease-fire would be, eh?

Another one? I am glad we crushed Hitler and Tojo in WWII, and Hamas/Hezbollah are no less implacably murderous. Can you imagine if the media demanded a cease fire back then? Yes, millions died, but many more millions of lives were saved in the decades after.

Israel is finally fighting back. The world will be a better place if they win, but their biggest enemy is the media. This is the final showdown of the MSM versus Amerikkka and their Zionist puppets. Nic Robertson et al. are throwing everything they have into the fight: terrorist propaganda points, pictures of wounded children, sympathetic stories of Hezbollah social workers.

I hope Israel resists and defeats their enemy because they’re our enemy too.

    Patricia (2cc180)

  24. Dwilkers,

Thanks for condemning that. I’d forgotten.

  26. Helen Thomas reminds me of a lot of the senior women my own mother associates with. Whatever reason or rationality they once had has been lost. Whoever employs her ought to throw a retirement party – quickly – before Tony Snow is forced to lead her by the arm to the White House infirmary – where she can receive the medication she so desperately needs.

Several people have criticized your comment as terrorist-friendly. It seems your parenting skills could use some work, too – and don’t blame Bill Cosby because he was joking.

    DRJ (fc0576)

  28. What a terrible thing a cease-fire would be, eh?

Do you have any rational basis for assuming Hezbollah would adhere permanently to a cease fire (including cross border raids that started this in the first place). Or is that irrelevant?

    Gerald A (dd601b)

  29. I am glad we crushed Hitler and Tojo in WWII…Can you imagine if the media demanded a cease fire back then?

Yeah Hitler should have proposed a cease fire after allied troops crossed into Germany. Some of the bloodiest fighting of the was occurred from that point. The genius wasn’t there to tell Roosevelt and Churchill “You can’t get your fill of killing, can you?”

    Gerald A (dd601b)

  30. Hey Psyberian, the next time you run into a member of Hezbollah who’s bent on killing you, why don’t you ask him for a cease-fire, and let me know how that goes? Oh, right, you won’t be able to…..

    CraigC (9cd021)

  31. the fact that she is the only one who asks real questions of the administration

Question. Singular. She rephrases it each time, but it’s always the same one: “Why won’t you admit this is all your fault?”

    Jim Treacher (c3be1b)

  32. Psyberian “I just want the bloodshed to stop.”

Good thing the Israeli gov’t is doing something to stop it.

#21 Wesson – Best laugh I’ve had all day. They should really get going on that cone of silence idea.

  33. Some of the comments above supporting Helen Thomas remind me of the modern school of parenting as espoused by one of my friends with his four year old boy. The little brat was terrorizing a conversation between adults fussing and yelling and carrying on as four year old boys will do. All his parents could be stirred to do was say “Let’s have a timeout”. When I did that stuff when I was a four year old boy, I received a swift swat on the rear, and good behavior was restored, momentarily at least.

Helen Thomas (and David Gregory) pride themselves as paragons of liberal “truthiness to power” and generally conduct themselves with all of the courtesy of that four year old boy.

Well Tony Snow delivered a quick verbal swat across the chops of the old gal today–which is a good thing. He does not have to stand there and be a punching bag for any idiot that comes along, and this was a reminder to Helen that, in his own way “He’s mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore”.

A little cut and thrust at the White House Press Conference is a good thing–and it might as well go both ways. No real harm to Helen–and no foul here either. She’ll get up off the deck and be punching tomorrow rephrasing her one question “Why won’t you admit this is all the President’s fault?” in her infinite variations of same.

  34. The lovely Miss Thomas was simply expressing a viewpoint not uncommon amongst the rest of our liberal friends.

One of my regular e-mail correspondents (whose name I will not divulge, since what she writes is in the form of private within a group e-mail, and not public posting) proclaims herself to be educated, fluent in five languages and wouldn’t discriminate against anyone, but she regularly asks why the Palestinians had to pay for the Holocaust, supports completely the Palestinian cause, and even sent an article today stating that the creation of Israel was a “mistake.”

This lovely liberal lady has blamed anti-Semitism on the Jews, because they have insulted everyone else by claiming to be the “chosen people,” claimed that neo-cons are mostly Jews who are loyal to Israel and the United States, in that order, just the whole disgusting ball of shit wax, yet not only says that she isn’t anti-Semitic, but actually believes that she isn’t.

There is a serious undercurrent of anti-Semitism out there, which most liberals have enough sense to at least try to disguise, but it isn’t buried very deeply.

    Dana (3e4784)

  35. “One of my regular e-mail correspondents (whose name I will not divulge, since what she writes is in the form of private within a group e-mail, and not public posting) proclaims herself to be educated, fluent in five languages and wouldn’t discriminate against anyone, but she regularly asks why the Palestinians had to pay for the Holocaust”

My daughter went through the FBI academy with a woman who sounds like your friend. She had a PhD in something important, spoke five languages, was athletic and good looking. My daughter, a lawyer who got tired of dirtbag clients and decided to arrest people instead, was intimidated until a day near the end. They have a practice exercise where the students arrest a white collar criminal. It’s an exercise like we use with medical students. When they went to put the cuffs on the arrestee, he went berserk.

My daughter had worked as a bank teller while in law school and had been held up twice by bank robbers. Both times she got a bonus for keeping her head and giving the robber the “bait pack” of money. She kept her cool in the practice exercise and it went well.

When it came the turn for the overachiever woman with the five languages, she collapsed in a puddle of tears and had a meltdown. Couldn’t handle the stress. She’s probably now a CIA analyst in counter proliferation, or something.

Could it be the same person ?

    Mike K (6d4fc3)

  36. Not the same person. My correspondent is a wealthy woman, widowed at a relatively young age, who was, I think, the trophy wife of a wealthy businessman.

Obviously, people can make up different persona on-line, but her personal story has remained remarkably consistent for the twelve years I’ve “known” her.

    Dana (3e4784)

  37. Wow.

I pointed out that Helen Thomas was asking about an AP report that the United States vetoed a UN resolution calling for a cease fire, and Dana call me an anti-semite liberal.

    That’s quite a stretch, pal.

    MplsDog (1fc1a2)

  38. I pointed out that Helen Thomas was asking about an AP report that the United States vetoed a UN resolution calling for a cease fire, and Dana call me an anti-semite liberal.

The US did not veto a resolution calling for a cease fire, and your link does not say that we did. We vetoed a resolution condemning Israel, and that ain’t the same thing.

You’d really have to pretend that you believe otherwise in order to say otherwise about an article headlined “U.S. vetoes U.N. condemnation of Israel”.

That’s probably where the notion that you’re an anti-semite comes from. I will certainly allow for the alternative possibility that you have a very low level of comprehension, but you can probably flesh out the facts for us.

    Pablo (08e1e8)

  39. Hey Psyberian, the next time you run into a member of Hezbollah who’s bent on killing you, why don’t you ask him for a cease-fire, and let me know how that goes? – CarigC

First off, the analogy doesn’t hold unless you’re ignorantly claiming that in the next few days, Israel will be totally destroyed by the continued warfare. But I doubt that you want to imply that. Too, with your kind of thinking, there would never be a cease-fire under any circumstances would there?

    Psyberian (dd13d6)

  40. Let’s all sing along now:

All that we’re asking, is give war a chance.

  42. I know; what a terrible person I am.

No, just naive. Sadly the option of the young but not of national governments such as Israel, surrounded by enemies whose stated sole purpose in life is Israel’s total destruction, or our own for that matter.

Your comments presuppose some rationality on behalf of the fanatic Islamofacists. A supposition that I would argue is at best naive and at worst far more dangerous than combat.

Last time Israel left Lebanon they succeeded only in convincing the Islamofacists that they were weak and could be beaten. We managed the same in Viet Nam and of course later in Lebanon and Somalia. It appears that a significant number of our population would like to try to dance to that tune again in Iraq. Very bad idea.

Our sworn enemies understand only the power of the sword we wield. We can only defeat ourselves. That, my friend is the way the real world works, at least with respect to the Islamofacists.

You simply can’t reason with a mad dog.

Unless you are my long-time personal correspondent, using a different name (and a very different writing style), I called you nothing.

I described one person, with whom I have twelve years of familiarity, and noted that “The lovely Miss Thomas was simply expressing a viewpoint not uncommon amongst the rest of our liberal friends.” Not uncommon does not mean everyone; not every liberal is anti-Semitic, nor is every person opposed to Israel’s policies anti-Semitic. But far too many of them are, Dog, far too many of them are.

  46. You guys should know the difference between Zionist and Jewish. There IS a difference. Mini-course below:

  47. I don’t believe Helen Thomas even heard or cared about Tony’s answer. Asking a question to embarass GWB is IMPORTANT! The answer is of no interest, after all, she is older than dirt and knows more than the dirt.

    Ray Simpson (75a3b5)

  48. Sure there is, blubonnet. I am a non-Jewish Zionist. I should know.

    Pablo (08e1e8)

  49. OK, shall we review the situation?

    1) It is often said that a good definition of insanity is doing the same thing under the same circumstances and expecting different results. The generalization is perhaps over broad, but such behavior certainly indicates a pronounced disconnect from reality.

    2) The Liberals are fond of saying that “Violence never solved anything”. There is absolutely no historical evidence to support this notion. Maintaining belief in this stupid little aphorism is rather like maintaining belief in the Easter Bunny as an adult: it requires a studied ignorance of life that, while it can be made to appear charming, disqualifies you to make any important decisions.

    3) The history of modern Israel is a history of treaties and cease fires violated by Arab groups who had no intention of honoring them, save as it was convenient while they prepared to attack the Jews once more. At this point, anyone who calls for a cease fire is guilty of both the mental aberrations described above, or a scoundrel who wishes to aid the terrorists in destroying Israel.

    4) Under the circumstances, no call for a cease fire can be taken seriously, save as an attack on Israel’s right to exist. All such must necessarily be either:

    a) Exercises in false piety; proposing a solution that the proposer is well aware will not work because it will make him look good in the short term, and he will not be asked to pay the price.

    or

    b) Exercises in brain dead delusion.

Therefore; EVEN IF THE UNITED STATES HAS EXPLICITLY BLOCKED ONE OR SEVERAL PROPOSED ‘CEASE FIRES’ Helen Thomas deserves to be slapped down for being either a conscious agent of terrorists of a deranged twit.

If you think that the international community should use a false public faith in a ‘peace process’ that has never worked, save to Israel’s disadvantage, fine. Say so. The fact remains that the international community – in the shape of the United Nations (*spit*) – was supposed, in combination with the Lebanese, to prevent exactly what Israel is reacting to, and failed to do so either through fecklessness or malice. If ‘innocent’ Lebanese are being killed or maimed now it is the fault of the Terrorists, and the fault of the ‘international community’ for tolerating them. Israel is merely fighting for her survival as a nation, and if she is not doing so as delicately as we might like, she has 6,000,000 reasons.

    C. S. P. Schofield (c1cf21)

  50. The only peace that has any lasting meaning is when it is the result of one country beating the snot out of another. The record after the second world war is an example. Give me one example of the “peace at any cost” making a positive diference. Check out Thomas Sowell most recent column
    http://www.townhall.com/columnists/thomassowell/archive.shtml

He explains it in terms we can all understand.

  51. CSPS & RS, here! here!

CSPS, I don’t see how you could state the facts in a more concise manner.

In the interst of full disclosure, I too am a non-Jewish Zionist.

Perhaps if we are all so interested in “peace” we can start with the entire ME agreeing that Israel has a right to exist. It’s about time the Islamofacists tried to create something instead of being fanatically focused on the destruction of Israel. Interesting that after literally billions and billions of dollars have been poured into “Palestine” that the people there have only refugee camps and suicide bombers to show for it.

This absolutely irrational hatred of Israel reminds me of something … can’t quite put my finger on it …
