I Condemn It All

Many serious leftists have arrived at the Sadly, No! web site through favorable links supplied by a serious and well-respected Constitutional lawyer named Glenn Greenwald. Ace is going to kill me for this, but I’ll provide you the links. There’s this one, which provides a Sadly, No! link as documentation of the right’s “juvenile name-calling,” and this one, which provides two Sadly, No! links as evidence of the “vile, deranged and psychosexually disturbed commentary” of Jeff Goldstein.

If you go to the Sadly, No! main page, there are four buttons at the top. One says “Store.” If you click on it, you get to a Cafe Press store (UPDATE: link broken; try this) with some items for sale bearing the logo:

Rope.

Tree.

Conservative.

Some Assembly Required.

The words are printed over a noose. You can purchase the coffee mug, the teddy bear, or any of various items of clothing.

There is, of course, no need for serious Constitutional lawyer Glenn Greenwald to condemn these items. They are, of course, a highly clever satire of the recent unutterably vile and murderous comments by Misha at the Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler site.

Confederate Yankee e-mails to say he has created his own T-Shirt:

Rope.

Tree.

Liberal.

Some Assembly Required.

This is disgusting, vile hate speech. I would condemn Confederate Yankee, but luckily I have already pre-condemned everything, making condemnation unnecessary.

UPDATE: Sadly, No! has hidden the evidence and replaced it with pie threats against me. Guys, with deceptive behavior like this, you’re seriously risking the reputation of key Greenwald source “Retardo.”

UPDATE x2: Actually, the evidence isn’t hidden, despite Sadly, No!’s best efforts. Turns out I was able to secure a screenshot of Sadly, No!’s “Kill the Conservatives!” T-shirts and other memorabilia.

This, together with an examination of the various false statements Sadly, No! made about their online Death Store, may be worth a separate post.

Sadly, Pwned!

UPDATE x3: There is a nice Google cache of the store, making a screenshot rather unnecessary. I guess that — like me and many of my commenters — the Googlebot was able to make it to the Death Store, even if Gavin M. of Sadly, No! (supposedly) couldn’t.

  2. this seems awfully juvenile. i wouldn’t have much to say to or do with wearers of either the conservative rope/tree shirt or the liberal one. labels are equally susceptible to distortion as they are to edification, so maybe it’s better to identify some principles you support instead.

[…] Nevertheless, in order to not pass Queen Gwendolyn’s deadline (the consequences of which would, undoubtedly, be severe), we must join with LC & IB Patterico in unequivocally, forcefully and determinedly denouncing Sadly, No!’s hate-filled eliminationist rhetoric. 6. Buried somewhere in here is a serious question, namely: “When is violence acceptable?”

Against supreme court justices for a stupid decision? – Of course not.

Against Misha for a stupid post? Likewise.

Against an armed and violent Baathist terrorist in Iraq. Yes, absolutely.

How about that same terrorist if he is in the USA? How about if he is a US citizen? When do you just kill him, and when do you arrest him?

There’s a continuum. Where is the break point? Where is the grey area?

Liberals seem to want us to err on the side of caution and arrest and try everybody. That’s nonsense – the Mahdi guy with the mask and the AK-47 needs to be shot dead and right now. I’m more in favour of kill a little more liberally (Not bad pun, eh?) and let God sort them out, but I have no idea of where and how a formal break point could be defined.

Oh quitcher bitchin’ ya silly bastard.

The ‘Rope, Tree, Conservative’ shirt is simply a parody of the infamous ‘Rope, Tree, Journalist’ T-Shirt that has, for years, been proudly advertised on the blog of every seething, sweating, porcine, mongloid wingnutty Ăźber-patriot in cyberspace (and always with an unstated parenthetical ‘New York Jewboy Liberal’ tacked onto the end.)

Moreover, it is still nowhere near as offensive as this garbage which has also been doing the rounds for years and which I’m sure you’ve never condemned.

Bottom line, for as long as you wingnuts refuse to even whittle at the beam firmly lodged in your collective eye, you have absolutely no high ground whatsoever from which to piss and moan about ‘Hate Speech’.

  10. Wow, why are leftists so irony deficient. Must be that diet of bitter losses.

Ok, you guys on the short bus, listen up and let me explain.

Greenwald got his panties is such a tight twist over an identical phrase on Misha’s site. So bad that the same irony dificient bozos as Sadly No ran in to condemn it. He then spun a knot of logical so twisted he was arguing for and against it on 3 blogs simultaneously.

Imagine selling the same teeshirts and condemning someone for basically saying the same thing. Well there is word for that. Hypocrisy.

So it is Sadly Hilarious that so many of you are completely inable to connect dots.

Oh, well, Patterico, you need a smarter class of trolls, because these are just bringing the rep of your site down. 😉

So, wait. I can say nasty things as long as it is “parody”? The impression I’d gotten over the last couple of weeks was that violence, no matter how tongue-in-cheek, must be condemned.

Sadly, No! » Return Of The Man From U.R.K.E.L. (d83a19)

  71. Let’s review, shall we?

“Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required.” This is funny, right? Someone’s going to have to explain the humor here. Is it funny as an expression of frustration, because you want to hang them, but can’t? Is it funny because it makes fun of people who talk about hanging journalists? I don’t see the funny. Nor do I see any irony, parody, or satire. To have any of those, you generally have to mean the opposite of what you’re saying. To me it seems like it advocates hanging journalists. But conservatives say it’s just humor, and nothing to be upset about.

So, in an effort to test conservatives’ notion of humor, Sadly, No! comes out with:

“Rope. Tree. Conservative. Some assembly required.”
Now, if this were about hanging conservatives, it wouldn’t be funny. But that’s not what it’s about. It was done in response to the journalist t-shirt to point out that there’s little humor to be found in talking about hanging people. It’s called satire. Hanging people really isn’t funny. It’s not. That is what Sadly, No! was trying to point out. And that’s why it was put up quickly and then removed after the point was made.

The irony isn’t that Sadly, No! engaged in a little satire, the irony is that conservatives think it’s funny to talk about hanging journalists, but don’t think it’s funny when someone talks about hanging conservatives. No, I’m sorry, that’s not irony. That’s hypocrisy.

    uberpatriot (a4dfd1)

  72. I don’t really think either is funny. And neither did many Sadly, No! commenters.

    Patterico (50c3cd)

  73. So they were selling a T-shirt that wasn’t supposed to be funny. Just to make a moral point. And test notions of conservative humor. For $17.95.

    Is that about right?

    Pablo (08e1e8)

  74. Message on both t-shirts: not satiric, not ironic, not parodic, not funny to anyone with a healthy sense of humor.

Creating the ‘conservative’ t-shirt to challenge the notion that such t-shirts are funny: satiric, parodic, and potentially funny to those not on the receiving end of the criticism.

Did Sadly, No! take it too far? I don’t think so — sometimes you have to push peoples’ buttons to make a point. The intention was not to have people consider hanging conservatives, but to get conservatives to reflect on their idea of ‘humor’ and, yes, to give conservatives a taste of their own medicine. Were any of the t-shirts going to be sold? No. These ‘virtual’ t-shirts appeared, made the point, and disappeared. The very real ‘journalist’ t-shirt is still available for sale.

    uberpatriot (a4dfd1)

  75. So they were selling a T-shirt to challenge a notion? For $17.95? And they just forgot to tell all the people with the notion. That they were challenging it? With a T-shirt? But not with parody? Or irony?

    Is that about right?

    Pablo (08e1e8)

  76. Were any of the t-shirts going to be sold? No.

Oh, then they shouldn’t have put them up for sale. Which they did.

    Pablo (08e1e8)

  77. I want my $17.95 back, yo.
