More Travel Advice Sought

What’s fun to do in the Bahamas? Particularly on Grand Bahama. Besides watching the hurricanes roll in, that is.

  1. Can’t speak to Grand Bahama, but here’s two bits of advice if you spend any time in Nassau / New Providence:

    1. Stay somewhere other than the Raddison on Cable Beach.

    2. Spend at least a day, possibly several, with Stuart Cove. Book weeks in advance of possible, as some of the cooler activities sell out in advance.

  2. Even if you know how to run a sailboat, go ahead and rent one that comes with a captain and cook for a few days and enjoy some of the best day sailing, quiet coves, and private beaches in the world. Lots and lots of islands, fresh seafood, sun and sand, friendly natives, and few distractions.

If you’re up for really high quality uninterrupted time with your family, a few days on the water, with someone else who has local experience to look after the boat and cook the meals, can’t be beat.

  3. If The Reef in Freeport’s still open, I’d recommend it. It was in a not-so-great neighborhood but all the locals ate there. Great fish, potato salad and teeth-cracking cold beer.

  4. Snorkeling. That was the one thing that I really enjoyed about my trip to Nassau seven years ago.

  5. I heard there’s a treasure hunt for a buried SUV that is being run by Volvo. Maybe that could be worth a little “digging” into?

    Just a suggestion.

  6. Sit by the beach/pool and drink. I suggest margaritas and smoothies with rum. Bahama Mamas are a little too fruity.

  7. Bahamas are a second-rate travel destination. The only reason to go there is for the bone fishing on the flats – which can be excellent. Well, kids go there for spring break but all they do is get drunk and etc.

  8. Try the Conch Chowder but I admit my advise is a bit dated as I lived in Freeport from 1964 to 67. One thing I remember as a kid was they would display wrecked cars around town to scare drivers about their crazy criving. Didn’t seem to work as they had plenty of new ones every year. It’s also fun when it is literally raining on one side of the street and dry & sunny on the other. The rain came in sheets and we would try to out run it as a game.
