On an Island

Filed under: Music — Patterico @ 11:24 am

On Friday night, I picked up On an Island by David Gilmour. I listened to it on a bike ride yesterday and have given it a couple more spins since then. Not every track works, but the effect of the whole is good enough for Gilmour fans. It strikes me as more Floyd-like than Gilmour’s previous solo efforts. It is reminiscent of early ’70s Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle. It is very laid-back and melodic. It’s not earth-shattering, but if you enjoy Gilmour’s style and his guitar work, you should enjoy it.

UPDATE: I also picked up a new Dark Side of the Moon tribute album. It is the entire album covered by various artists such as Tommy Shaw, Adrian Belew, Steve Howe, Bill Bruford, and many others. I have only listened to the first half, so a full review will have to wait until a later post. I was very impressed with Adrian Belew’s vocals on “Time,” however.

  1. You’re review is right on target Patterico. As a P.F. aficionado myself, it was worthwhile to pick it up. What I like about it is Gilmore’s guitar playing on a couple of tracks on that CD: the songs are mellow, and yet have an edge to them at the same time. I like Stevie Ray Vaughan’s bluesy song, “Life Without You,” for the same reason.

I’ll have to get the DSOTM tribute album. Historically, tribute albums are lacking, however. But I hope this one’s different.

  2. P — I know you probably only turn on the tube to watch educational programming, so you might have caught a minute or two of that Aussie Pink Floyd cover band that has been replaying on KOCE. The first time I saw that special a few months ago, it had me wondering for a couple of minutes… The sound was close, the visuals were nicely copied, but the players were wrong. Now, I know that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but do they really get crowds to pony up $50 a ticket for that?!? I’d rather do the old Laser Floyd thing at the Planetarium.

  3. I knew there was some good in everyone. Nosh, I am a rabid Pink Floyd fan and, even more so, a Rogers Waters fan. I’ll be nicer to you the next time you say you are ashamed to be an American.

  4. PS: We only have one TV in the house and a young daughter so, whether we like it or not, we “turn on the tube” to watch PBS programming. Content-wise, I like “Arthur”. “Dragontales” has interludes with music by Randy Newman. “Barney” is horrible with an occasional redeeming cameo feature. I remember “Sesame Street” being better but we also have video anthologies of the better episodes. To paraphrase Harlan Ellison, “I Do Not Want To Scare The Baby, And I Must Scream”. 😉

  5. OK, here is the question: As one who had hundreds of LPs, thousands of cassettes, and now hundreds of CDs — I’m assuming you organize them alphabetically. Do you put the David Gilmour or Roger Waters (or Syd Barrett) next to the Pink Floyd, or separately? Do you place the Pink Floyd under P or F? What about Jethro Tull — J or T?

Last saw Pink Floyd live at the Sports Arena back in about 1989. “Comfortably Numb” ended the show, and there was this orb that morphed up from behind the band with sparkly laser lights that changed shape like a large soap bubble. Now I’ve seen oceans and sunsets and gazed into lover’s eyes, but I sure would like to see that orb thing again!
