I've got many friends on the department but this is one I am completly sicken and embarrassed of, I'm sure the woman who gave birth to her feel the same way. It's so sad that she knew which men to sleep with to get them to stand behind her.

Am I missing something?

"Gavira’s body had six broken ribs, a broken collarbone and bruises that would be hard for any man to inflict upon himself. Most curious was a snapped neck bone that medical experts say is more often seen when someone has been strangled by a pair of hands."

Suicidal ideation is of course important. Six broken ribs deserve some explanation as well.

We reflexively expect MSM sources to omit the significant. Let's not follow their example. A poor devil's demise deserves some accuracy on all sides.

[...] In a second “Power of the Jump”™ post, I note that the paper reports on whether a jail inmate’s death was a suicide, or the result of beatings and neglect by jail personnel. My mistake. I'm still a newcomer to your blog.

When in school, I had an English Lit instructor who said you should always read the last chapter first. I had thought it was to make sure you kept everything in context as you read through the story. Now I'm not so sure.

He may have been a LA Times reader.

It's been a long time since I was on the staff of The Kentucky Kernel, the first entirely self-supporting daily university student newspaper in the country, but I can tell you what the University of Kentucky's journalism professors would have said about this: they'd have given it a D-.

Now, there is a difference between writing a story and the editor's duty. The story was written with the assumption it would all be read. I might quibble with the writer's decision to place the information about past suicide attempts so late in the article, but it was the editor's decision which determined the position of the "jump."

But, that was easily enough solved. Instead of

Officials say a depressed and ailing Compton auto mechanic hanged himself shortly before his release. But the family contends he was taunted and beaten by a jailer,

a good editor would have altered it to:

To me, the question is: was this a deliberate attempt to slant the story, or just crappy editing? It doesn't matter how you answer that question, the Times does not come out looking very good.
