More Books

My advance copy of the “Anonymous Lawyer” novel arrived today. It looks like it will be a breeze to read. It is a story told in the form of blog entries and e-mails.

Also, last night, I picked up a copy of the new Mark Bowden book, Guests of the Ayatollah : The First Battle in America’s War with Militant Islam. It looks like a good read, but will be a little more time-consuming.

I’ll let you know my thoughts on both once I have read them.

  1. “Guests” is excellent and a great example of reporting. He interviewed everyone he could find, which is a big job 27 years after the fact. It is slightly marred by Bowden’s political views. He spends more time than I thought approprate defending Carter. He also rehearses our sins in Iran back to WWII which I think were far less significant than Bowden does. I also think there was a chance for the Shah to survive if Carter had supported him but there is no way to prove that. We did get the worst of all possible worlds from the incident. It is a good read and I suspect you will enjoy it. I recommended “The Guts To Try,” the story of the rescue mission in my Amazon review. It is good.

  2. Since you have introduced a literary topic, is there such a thing as literary sock puppets?

“In short, the committee found two cases where [Ward] Churchill extensively plagiarized the work of others. They found other cases where he first wrote articles under a false name, and then in a later work cited those earlier articles as providing independent confirmation for his own claims.”
