Jason Leopold might not be the only “journalist” involved in this Fitzmas Hoax story that has used a sock puppet. Unfortunately or fortunately, there’s no professional entrance test to be a journalist. So we’ll just have to accept Leopold as a journo — albeit a discredited politicized hack on his way to the Weekly World News. Sock puppetry is the least of Leopold’s offenses; in comparison, Michael Hiltzik is a model of rectitude.

Personally, I liked the partial apology on the truthout site:

The time has now come, however, to issue a partial apology to our readership for this story. While we paid very careful attention to the sourcing on this story, we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle. In moving as quickly as we did, we caused more confusion than clarity. And that was a disservice to our readership and we regret it.

They “g(ot) too far out in front of the news-cycle?” Yeah, I guess in typical liberal thought, if Mr. Rove is indicted for something, anything, by anyone next September, it will be verification of the truthout story.
