The Background Reading Is Worth It for the Payoff

Filed under: Humor — Patterico @ 8:41 pm

First read this: Christopher Hitchens’ attack on Juan Cole. Then read this: Juan Cole’s response, calling Hitchens a drunk and saying (repeatedly): “One, two, three, four! We don’t want your stinking war!” (H/t A.L.)

Then read iowahawk. And laugh, and laugh.

  1. The first link is to Dahlia Lithwick lampooning Anna Nicole Smith?

  2. Iowahawk did the job–but there’s a little plagiarism problem there. You think Iowahawk is stretching to make a point–and then you realize that there are passages there which he lifted verbatim from Cole’s original attack on Hitchens. I mean you don’t need to make this stuff up (although Iowahawk did write most of it) if you can lift it from the original.

Wow, I’m off tonight. First I thought it was Thursday, and then I used the wrong Slate link. I fixed it. Thanks. That’s maybe the third mistake I’ve made tonight.

  4. From Juan Cole’s blog linked above:

“Hitchens is paid to publish there because he is a prominent journalist. But then he should behave like a journalist, not like a hired gun for the far Right, smearing hapless targets of his ire.”

Does Juan Cole think he’s a hapless target? If the shoe fits …

  5. Wow. Remind me never to tick off Iowahawk.

  6. Again the utter fatuity of the Left (especially the Academic Left) rears its ugly head. Christopher Hitchens favors the invasion of Iraq, so suddenly he has become “a hired gun of the Far Right.” As if his belief in a single payer health plan, redistribution of wealth, public ownership of key industries like oil, etc. are suddenly rendered moot.

Note the comments under Cole’s blog entry — all of his little sycophants rising up to shout “bravo, bravo” like they were responding to Castro or Mao. What do you want to bet that Cole deletes all the negative comments? I would give it even money that he also uses sock puppets, just as a sporting proposition.

  7. Wow. Remind me never to tick off Iowahawk.

Or Christopher Hitchens. Especially when he’s sober!

    And *especially* when he’s drunk!!

  8. I consider myself a professional boozer, and I would NEVER to with the notion of dancing with drawn swords against soeone like Hitch, even if he’d packed a gallon under his belt in an offer of a handicap.

  9. If you want to laugh (or cry) read the comments on Cole’s blog from his followers. I did yesterday and I’m not sure what to say about it.

  10. As to the comments on Cole’s blog, they’ve picked their horse and they are riding him to the end of the universe. And they don’t need any stinking facts or rebuttals beyond ‘he peeked under my clothing, an invasion of my privacy, so I don’t have to address the fact that he found I have the reproductive system of a woman’.

These are the same folks (loosely defined) that gave disgraced Congressman Jim Wright a standing ovation on the House floor and had a rally on the White House lawn (Al Gore – paraphrasing ‘BC is one of the best Presidents of all time’) when Clinton was impeached. In the sports world they’re called ‘homers’.
