Patterico on Ace’s and Goldstein’s “Hoist the Black Flag” Radio Show

You can listen by going here and clicking on the Hoist the Black Flag icon. It’s on at 5 after the hour every hour for the next 20 hours or so.

Ace held up his end of the bargain and didn’t come on to me — at least during the show.

Tell me what you think.

  1. Really enjoyed it. You guys covered newspaper’s fear of being replaced and all the important points that seem to hit the blogs and miss the editor’s desk. Go for a weekly segment.

  2. Agree with VT Neighbor. You were a great guest. Hope you get the chance to do it again soon. Nice of you to point out that there are some decent folks out there, even of the sinister persuasion.

  3. You were very good. Not a trace of Texas accent.(Smile) You have a very good conversational style — you talk “with” not “at” people. You made all your points. I thought Ace could have talked less and let you talk more (I’ll keep it in mind when I have my own radio show).

  4. And the times we live in… when were so many reporters at the center of a story… as the actual news itself.

IMO, journalists gravitate toward what they do b/c they want to change the world. It’s when these values and preconceived beliefs serve a reporter’s ego to ‘push’ a story, rather than let the information arrive as just that… information. I really think without the Internet, we would see no change. The resistance to blogs is interesting as it’s a dense collection of data, frequently with demographic stats right in the blogger’s profile. Newspaper resists.

  5. Very nice!

I thought it was a particularly interesting (and accurate) point that to get the most people to listen to the criticisms of the MSM, we need to reach…. the MSM. Because they’ve got a ton of readers compared to most blogs. (Even relatively big blogs don’t have anything like the LAT’s circulation.)

I still consider Hiltzik’s actions in a more severe light than our host does; Pat again described Hiltzik as (paraphrasing) more idiot than crook for sock-puppeting.

I hope it was fun to do the radio gig!

  6. It was a blast. I’ve done Pundit Review in Boston twice now, and KABC with Jill Stewart once, and it’s always, always fun. The biggest downer was having to pass on Hugh Hewitt because I had to work.

  7. Thanks for the nice comments, everyone.

  8. Yeah… you have a nice calm speaking style. It’s always fun to hear the voice behind the blogger (as opposed to radio where it’s the face behind the voice). Anyway, I didn’t know if you would sound maxed out and over the top like Bill Handel or more low-key. You’re a natural! Your hosts were great too. I tried logging in and sending a comment but maybe the show isn’t hooked up for e-mail yet.

Good work gentlemen. What’s on the sked for next week?

  9. Only a moment to comment…

There seems to be several types of anonymousness (time prob, bad word choice, I know…). Some forms are innocent, some are less-innocent misrepresentations.

The less-innocent misrepresentations also seem to have a number of levels. On the lowest rung is what I call “spoofing”.

    What Hiltzik did was spoofing.

ahhhh, man — to conclude, quickly: As they have been expressed so far, the terms and meanings of those terms are not really on the mark yet.

I haven’t heard anyone really express Hiltzik’s particular type of anonymousness accurately. Sock pupperty is cute, but does not catch it. Not even happy with my own term — “spoofing”.

I think you, Patterico, are also hunting (somewhat) for a way to express which circle of Dante’s Inferno that Hiltzik’s type of spoofing really resides on.

Sorry for the hit and run. (Did I hit and run with premeditated intent…???)
