Quote Quiz #2

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:03 am

Ah, the quote quiz. It’s fast becoming a Tuesday morning tradition here at Patterico.

Here’s how it works: I toss out the quotes. You answer without Googling or reading the comments. Most of you shrug your shoulders in confusion. CraigC and Mrs. P. mop the floor with the rest of you.

5 points for each correct band/artist. 1 point for each correct song title.

One of the quotes is relatively timely. You get 5 bonus points if you can tell me which one, and why.

Here they are:

1
It is the scent of garlic
That lingers on my chocolate fingers

2
My brain hurt like a warehouse
It had no room to spare

3
He was in search of an answer
The nature of what we are
He was trying to do it a new way
He was bright as a star

4
All the drunks just stumble by
And mumble their abuse

5
Nicotine smears, long, long dried tears, invisible tears
Safe in my own words, learning from my own words
Cruel joke, cruel joke

6
Standing next to me in this lonely crowd
Is a man who swears he’s not to blame
All day long I hear him shout so loud
Crying out that he was framed

7
You’re older than you’ve ever been
And now you’re even older
And now you’re even older
And now you’re even older
You’re older than you’ve ever been
And now you’re even older
And now you’re older still

8
Then I’ll know that you will plainly see
The biggest fool that ever hit the big time

9
I go to some barroom
To drink with my friends
Where the women they can’t follow
To see what I spend

10
I hope you can take these words in stride
Without dredging up your wall of pride

Bonus:
Morning comes without a clue, he sees the day through ruined eyes
Wonders who this stranger is, with fallen prophecy
Every time the same old thing, someone comes in with the night
Locks him in this foolish cell and throws away the key

  1. Too tired to read through the rest of the quotes, but had to comment on #1. Peter Gabriel, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, The Lamia. Spent many hours as a depressed and pretentious teenager listening to that album.

  2. #4: “He Knew,” by Kansas.

    Xrlq (f52b4f)

  3. Didn’t recognize #1, but assuming the first comment was almost-right, the artist is Genesis, not Peter Gabriel as a solo artist.

    Xrlq (f52b4f)

  4. I know two of them….

    #3 is Kansas ‘He Knew’

#8 is Buck Owens ‘Act Naturally’…I assume this is what you meant by the timely one because sadly he just died…:( Buck has always been one of my favorites.

  5. After trying this for the third time I realised that lyrics of songs don’t stick in my head. The tunes on the other hand…

    paul (001f65)

  6. #4: “He Knew,” by Kansas

I meant #3, of course. You made the same error on mine, probably for the same reason: the number is on one line, and the lyrics are on another, so it’s easy to forget that the number relates to what comes after rather than before. I’ll probably use ordered lists if I do another quiz.

    Xrlq (f52b4f)

  7. As with all your other quote quizzes, I know not one.

    Leigh (3af625)

  8. I own the albums for 1 and 6. 1 is Lamia by Genesis on Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Googled 6, much to my shame, it’s “I shall be released” by The Band. Been a logn time since I saw the last waltz.

    nittypig (4c1c43)

  9. #2 David Bowie, 5 years from the best album of all time: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
“To be played at full volume”.

    Veeshir (dfa2bf)

  10. #2 David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust album

#8 Beatles – song “Act Naturally”

    Robin Lochner (d71f71)

  11. #1: Genesis – The Lamia, tLLDoB
#5: Marillion – Pseudo Silk Kimono, MC

    Wiz (041bc8)

  12. #6 is Bob Dylan, and #8 is Buck Owens. That’s all folks!

    Black Jack (d8da01)

  13. #9 is “Moonshiner” by Bob Dylan. Again, the Uncle Tupelo version is the one I know best.

As for the rest, wring me out and call me Quickie.

    Bobby (df25e0)

  14. 7. They Might Be Giants, even my 9 year old would get that one!

    Shawn (f160ba)

  15. If you post John Denver, I might stand a chance.
    🙂

    RHB (0b223e)

  16. #3 Kansas “He Knew”
#4 Blue Rodeo “What am I Doing Here?”
#7 They Might Be Giants “Time” (not sure of the title)
#10 The Grays “No One” (I can sing all the words but don’t know the exact title)

    Mrs. Patterico (de0616)

  17. #8 Act Naturally, covered by the Beatles but originally by Hank Williams or George Jones

    Drawing blanks on everything else

    Kent (6631f8)

  18. So far, I think Mrs. P. is winning. But we haven’t heard from CraigC yet . . .

    Patterico (de0616)

  19. “But we haven’t heard from CraigC yet .”

Maybe because he’s following the rules by not Googling but he’s still thumbing through his eighteen editions of “The Best Fake Book Ever”?

    nk (57e995)

  20. Everyone else beat me to Kansas, but I do believe I’m first for #5: “Pseudo-Silk Kimono” by Marillion from the Misplaced Childhood album which featured the hit “Kayleigh.”  Released in 1985, as I recall.  Love that band.  By the way, they’re still around making terrific music.

    Diecast Dude (d8da01)

  21. Oops… didn’t see Wiz’s comment.

    Diecast Dude (d8da01)

  22. #8 Act Naturally, covered by the Beatles but originally by the late great Buck Owens

    BrotherMan (b0b916)

  23. Xrlq:

You’re obviously right, and I stand corrected. I never cared for much of the post-Peter Gabriel Genesis (except maybe Trick of the Tail). All the albums up to and including Lamb Lies Down, I just reflexively associate with Gabriel.

    darkuspawnus (1e9754)

  24. I’m feeling VERY out of touch, because I only recognized #3 (Kansas, “He Knew” as everyone has already said).

So, either I’m getting too old for this (quite possible, since I rarely listen to anything later than the mid-80’s [rolls eyes]), *OR* y’all listen to such “obscure” music that I stand no chance… Heck, I don’t recognize most of the bands, nevermind the LYRICS!

    😉

    Romeocat (4a1b88)

  25. (Valley Girl voice) “Oh….my Goooood!” This is not good.

#1 is Genesis, and I’m pretty sure it’s from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

    #2 is David Bowie

#3 is “Portrait (He Knew)” by Kansas from Point of Know Return.

On #8, I’m guessing you want the Beatles (Act Naturally), but it was a cover of a Buck Owens song. (light bulb) Aha, our extra credit, cuz Buck just died. No more pickin’ and grinnin’.

    Very, very ugly.

    CraigC (8e5f52)

  26. Also, you were late. Luckily for you, I waited longer than usual to post the answers.

    Patterico (de0616)

  27. So, either I’m getting too old for this (quite possible, since I rarely listen to anything later than the mid-80’s [rolls eyes]) . . . .

Fully five of the songs are from the 60s or 70s.

    Patterico (de0616)

  28. What can I say, it took me a while to get around to it. Although, I did take a quick look on Tuesday, and I’ll admit I wasn’t looking forward to tackling those. I thought it was Friday nights that you gave last call.

    CraigC (8e5f52)

  29. In fact, that’s the only reason I got everything on the Kansas song. For three days I was trying to remember whether that was Kansas or from Steve Walsh’s first solo album. If you liked Kansas, you’ll love that record. It’s called “Schemer-Dreamer.”

    CraigC (8e5f52)

  30. […] Here are the answer’s to Tuesday’s Quote Quiz #2. As usual, CraigC took first place, with Mrs. P. a close second. Here are the final results: […]
