Cyclone Larry

Tim Blair reports on cyclone Larry, which is headed for the Queensland coast in Australia. It looks ugly. We vacationed in Australia and New Zealand for our honeymoon, and stayed for a while in Cairns, which looks like it’s going to take a pretty good hit.

Tim notes that this story is being covered very poorly in the media. For example, there is not one word in the L.A. Times about it. But, what the hell. It’s just Australia. Right?

  1. Don’t worry. If they can find a way to pin it on George Bush they will cover it.

  2. Well, shoot, that’s easy enough! President Bush said that the United States would not be bound by the ridiculous Kyoto Protocols, so he’s responsible for Global Warming™, which created cyclone Larry!

  3. Speaking of cyclones, what’s up recently with the Midwest’s having over 100 tornados in one day? I’m not blaming global warming, but what’s going on here? I’ve never heard of that happening before. First, I had to get used to the idea of “scattered tornados” and now over one hundred of them – in one day? I’m hoping that part of the answer is because we can detect them with instruments better than we could before.

  4. From a meteorology textbook table of annual numbers of tornadoes-“More tornadoes are being reported as populations increase and tornado-spotting technology improves.”

  5. Psy:

There are more tornadoes in the Midwest these days because people keep building more trailer parks.

  6. […] The L.A. Times has finally published something on Cyclone Larry. Apparently, even when it’s perfectly obvious something major is going to happen, it’s not news unless it’s already happened . . . […]

  7. Psyberian,

I don’t know your age, but I can remember outbreaks like this, say 1973 and 1974. The average number of tornadoes in the US is approx 1000, and I recall hearing that number in 1973.
