Quote Quiz #1
I thought it might be fun to have an occasional music quote quiz. The following quotes are all from rock songs. you earn 5 points for correctly naming the band, and 1 bonus point for correctly naming the song. There are 60 total points. The first person to get the high score wins.
It’s a hard quiz. To get all 10 right, you would have to share exactly my taste in music, which is incredibly unlikely. The winning score will likely be under 30.
I’ll announce the winner on Friday, or earlier if we all get bored.
Here are the quotes:
1
There’s a pointlessness about it all
I gotta force that to the back of my mind
The important thing now is just
I gotta survive2
Burn your TV in your yard
Gather round it with your friends
And warm your hands upon the fire
And start again3
And curse Sir Walter Raleigh
He was such a stupid git4
The scientists say
It’ll all wash away
But we don’t believe anymore5
You can’t get loose if there’s too much light6
She’s the girl from central casting
Always played the sweet young orphan
Or the hooker with a heart of gold
But she got her SAG card pulled
She turns tricks down on Cahuenga
Tells herself it’s research for her next greatest role7
‘Cause when you’re in the company of strangers
Though it’s the strangers you call friends
You know before you start
Just how it’s gonna end8
Stand by the stairway
You’ll see something certain to tell you
Confusion has its cost9
I relied on you to make me see
The foolishness of paragraphs
That were better as one word10
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Googling is cheating.
Answers in the comments below.
I read them over twice and don’t recognize a single one.
Black Jack (d8da01) — 3/7/2006 @ 7:54 amGotta agree with Black Jack on this one…maybe I’m too young to know any of these.
[There’s more than one from the sixties . . . — Patterico]
Bogie (ee0480) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:07 amI recognize exactly *one* of them, #6. Glen Phillips, “Train Wreck”.
Bogie – for that song, at least, it’s not an age thing. I first heard the song in 1998 or so.
aphrael (6b0647) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:26 amyow!
paul (3370f7) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:39 amNot a one. And I am old enough…I think.
I recognize the last one — “Red Barchetta” by Rush, from the “Moving Pictures” album.
Steve Bragg (50a260) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:53 amI wanna cry. I tend to think I’ve heard every rock song written for the last 40 years, but obviously NOT. I don’t recognize a single song. 🙁
sharon (e51965) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:54 am#3 is “I’m So Tired” by the Beatles.
JVW (d667c9) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:00 am#8. Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin
Alan Kellogg (41b4b7) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:05 amI don’t recognize a single one either. But I do know something, Number 8 is definitely not Stairway to Heaven.
pepster (7804ef) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:25 amSteve beat me to the punch; I recognized Red Barchetta, and just about nuttin’ else.
Xrlq (f52b4f) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:45 amI cheated, I googled and #8 is Crosby, Stills and Nash — Helplessly Hoping.
Trip (083fa2) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:45 amI recognize several, but I’m having trouble with the exact songs.
#8 is a Stephen Stills song. Helplessly Hoping?
Yep, #3 is the Beatles, as mentioned before.
#2 is Toad the Wet Sprocket, but I can’t remember the song title
#5 You Never Cry Like a Lover, The Eagles
Damn, several of these really bug me because I know them! *lol*
[You’re doing the best of anyone so far. Some of these are pretty obscure. — Patterico]
ken (f83b7d) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:53 amKen – erm. you’r right about #2. I feel stupid for not recognizing it.
*sigh*
aphrael (e7c761) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:57 amLurker here; but quizzes like this always drag me out of the woodwork.
#4 is from “Sin City” by Gram Parsons. (Although the Uncle Tupelo version is in my head now.)
I recognized #3 as well, but none of the others.
b
[The Uncle Tupelo version is brilliant. It takes a great song and builds on it significantly. — Patterico]
Bobby (194852) — 3/7/2006 @ 10:29 amWhat, no CW?
Harry Arthur (40c0a6) — 3/7/2006 @ 11:03 am#2 is Toad the Wet Sprocket, but I can’t remember the song title
“Walk on the Ocean?”
SPJ (f72079) — 3/7/2006 @ 12:44 pmHmmm. I would’ve said that #3 was Jethro Tull’s Thick as a Brick but now that I’ve mentally sung through “I’m So Tired” (since the entire Beatle’s catalog is apparently engraved on my brain) yeah, I concede that it is indeed the Fab Four.
I have the worst feeling that I actually know all of these songs, just these particular snippets of lyrics aren’t syncing up for me right now. I love “Red Barchetta” but I didn’t catch it! Grrr.
Joan (1f3f15) — 3/7/2006 @ 12:52 pmSPJ – no, that’s not “walk on the ocean”. 🙂 That song I can recite from memory.
aphrael (e7c761) — 3/7/2006 @ 1:08 pmNow, on this test, I draw a blank.
Patterico has a quiz up. I recognize none of ’em. My response is an unbroken series of blank looks. I would have done a lot better if it had been things like these: 1. Her hair was dark, and all pinned up with gold. Her lips were red, and her eyes wer…
Silicon Valley Redneck (72c8fd) — 3/7/2006 @ 2:16 pmPatterico:
Feh. I got the Beatles one, but not the others… and in fact, even when someone identifies a song, I instantly recognize that not only have I never heard that particular ditty, I’ve typically never listened to a single thing by that band. Toad the wet what?
(Except for “Helplessly Hoping,” which I didn’t recognize but have reluctantly heard when they play it on the oldies station; I remember the tune, but the only words I recall are the first two. I think there are much better CSN songs that don’t get airplay… but that’s a different rant.)
All this shows is that there is so much good music out there (if one looks for it), that the sack of songs that imprinted any individual person is unlikely to be repeated in another.

Dafydd (6e94cd) — 3/7/2006 @ 2:26 pmDo you guys like this? Should I do it again?
I could easily do this every week; I could give you rock quotes until the cows come home — heck, I could even continue long after the cows are safely tucked into their beds.
Is it too hard to be enjoyable?
I put one really obscure one in there because it would be really cool if someone knew it (#9), but many of them are from artists and bands that you should have at least heard of. And you have collectively guessed more than half of them already . . .
Patterico (4d4be8) — 3/7/2006 @ 4:17 pm#1 sounds like Ben Affleck.
Zhombre (cc5f79) — 3/7/2006 @ 4:47 pmKevin Gilbert. “Song For a Dead Friend.”
CraigC (4525c5) — 3/7/2006 @ 6:42 pmAnd no, I didn’t Google it. I liked Toy Matinee a lot.
CraigC (4525c5) — 3/7/2006 @ 6:48 pmCraigC:
Tell everyone else which one you’re talking about.
Wasn’t it spooky listening to that song after Kevin Gilbert died?
Patterico (de0616) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:11 pmNot one recognised here. 20 must be far too young.
Leigh (3af625) — 3/7/2006 @ 8:49 pm#1 and #7 still to go.
I am impressed with readers’ collective knowledge, though.
Patterico (de0616) — 3/7/2006 @ 9:21 pm10 is Rush and the song is Red Barchetta
Smitty (9c862b) — 3/8/2006 @ 9:35 amThe stuff young people listen to these days. Now if you had put in “moja droga ja cie kocham”, I might have had a chance.
nk (2e1372) — 3/8/2006 @ 12:44 pmNumber 7 is from one of my favorite Gin Blossoms songs: “Hold Me Down”. A Doug Hopkins classic. It kicks off their live DVD “Just South of Nowhere” and is one of the cuts that makes “New Miserable Experience” an epic record.
vertex11 (65cbc6) — 3/8/2006 @ 4:39 pmI can assure you young guys that none of them was Sinatra!
beaufort (71415b) — 3/8/2006 @ 5:06 pmJust #1 to go!
Patterico (4d4be8) — 3/8/2006 @ 5:16 pmSorry, my mom is ill, and I had to fly to Philly.
My comment was about #9……#9……#9….
Kevin Gilbert was the driving force behind Toy Matinee. You might remember their big hit, “The Last Plane Out.”
CraigC (99ee56) — 3/9/2006 @ 8:20 amI googled #1, and haven’t heard of the band or song at all. I’ll avoid the temptation to post the name.
I figured I would know at least a couple of the songs, but got not a one of them.
Andy (6feefb) — 3/9/2006 @ 9:56 amI thought Toy Matinee’s big song was “The Ballad of Jenny Ledge.” Very much like Steely Dan . . . except good.
Patterico (4d4be8) — 3/9/2006 @ 12:22 pmHeeeeyyyyyy, you don’t like The Dan, man? I should have said their first big hit.
CraigC (99ee56) — 3/9/2006 @ 1:51 pm1) Pink Floyd?
Pigilito (6cc896) — 3/10/2006 @ 5:18 amNope.
Patterico (4d4be8) — 3/10/2006 @ 8:55 am#1 sounds like Springsteen from the Nebraska album. Tom Joad or something.
Karl Maher (910b19) — 3/10/2006 @ 3:49 pmAgain: nope.
Patterico (de0616) — 3/10/2006 @ 8:16 pm1 ??
