Don Knotts Dies

Filed under: Real Life — Patterico @ 4:24 pm

Don Knotts has died. He was a comic genius and will be missed.

UPDATE: Man. Darren McGavin died as well. I used to watch the Night Stalker all the time when I was a kid. He will also be missed.

  1. I’m so bummed. First Barney Fife, now Carl Kolchak. I loved The Night Stalker as a kid and would make sure we were home Friday nights to watch his show, which scared the bejeebers out of me.

  2. Interestingly, Knotts and McGavin did work together in a Disney movie back in the day. “No Deposit, No Return.” Alongside the lovely Barbara Feldon. *sigh*

I’ve never known a world without Don Knotts, but it’s comforting to know that due to the man’s timeless talents, we may never truly know a world without him.

    So long, Barn.

  3. I’m going to date myself here, but I first came to McGavin in the original “Mike Hammer” TV series. He did a great job on that one.

  4. We never missed “The Night Stalker” at our house. The stories were great, and I used to really enjoy the interaction between Kolchak and his boss, played by Simon Oakland. The creator of the X-files has said that Night Stalker was the inspiration for that series.

I will never forget one episode when an evil Indian spirit would appear to people as someone they loved right before killing them. My little brother was pretty shook up as we went to bed. My dad went it a few minutes later to check on him. When he did, John pulled a cross out from under the covers just in case dad was one of the spririts.

They still show the old reruns on one of the cable channels now and then. Still enjoy them as much as when I was a kid.

  5. Is it true that as a tribute, all of the bailiffs tomorrow will carry one bullet in their shirt pockets?
