Octopus Eats Shark

At bedtime tonight, our daughter asked my wife what eats sharks. My wife said that people do, and she said: “I know that, Mom. But what else eats sharks?” My wife didn’t know, but promised she’d look on the computer.

Turns out this octopus eats sharks. Quite an amazing video.

  1. I believe that dolphins can kill sharks too (but they don’t eat them normally).

  2. Polar bears do kill and eat whales…. so I’d imagine they’d eat any shark that got too close to the surface. I don’t imagine that happens very often though. (But I wouldn’t have imagined polar bears preying on whales either.)

There apparently _is_ a ‘Giant Squid’ that sounds large enough. And there are a lot of types of sharks that just aren’t that big – Orca v. Dogfish isn’t a real contest. Larger sharks probably eat smaller ones also.

  3. That’s amazing, Al. Better call Greenpeace.

On some nature site or another, there’s a film clip (not as clear as the one that clam linked to) of an orca killing a great white shark and letting her calf eat it. My money’s on the orca, not the polar bear.

  4. Wow, that video was amazing — even more so than the pictures of snowflakes. But somehow I doubt that the video would help your daughter to go to sleep, Patterico.

  5. Eating Sharks

Fun Fact for the Day: Did you know that a giant octopus can eat a shark like there’s nothing to it?

    Yeah, me neither.

  6. Now I know where my collection of pet sharks have been going…

  7. Towards the end of the clip the narrator mentioned that the sharks being eaten were 3-4 feet long, so I don’t know if this counts as an epic discovery…

(i.e. most anything that size is lunch if there’s any sort of predator nearby).

Now show me an octopus who can bring down a great white and I’ll be scared…

  8. For that, you need the elusive giant squid. Shiver….

  9. For that, you need the elusive giant squid. Shiver….

    Here he is in action…

(and at 25 feet he just might be able to manage a great white)

  10. Giant Octopus Attacks Mini-Sub

These Octopuses are something else. I couldn’t find the video yet, but here is a link to some pictures of a small sub being attacked by a huge octopus: http://www.cbc.ca/bc/story/bc_octopus-sub20060127.html

Since the attacker was persuaded to go away with a burst of water and sea debris, its motives are unclear. But it either wanted to eat the sub or boink it.
