Morons (You Pick Which Ones!)

Ok, so there’s this boy genius. He graduated from Harvard Law School before his testicles descended (ok maybe not quite, but pretty close).

So, what does he do? Well, how about post a bunch of his law school outlines where he refers to black people as “nigs”? That’s an awesome start, dude!

Of course, one cannot simply be a moron in a vacuum. In fact, the Clam’s Third Law of Morondynamics states that “for every idiocy, there is an equal and opposite reaction of idiocy.” So, what did we get here? An attempt to pull an unrelated article written by the kid that had been accepted for publication in the Yale Law Journal.

Awesome!

  1. I can’t help but wonder with a name like Camara if the Harvard leftizoids again performed their own racist, “low expectations of minorities” song & dance again and when Canamar didn’t come up sounding like another victim, well the fools were just shaken to the core…

  2. We had a couple of highly publicized cases in Illinois of people performing brilliantly in law school and on the bar exam and then being denied licensure — the first for being an intemperate jackass and the second for being an out and out racist. Law school is not that hard and (with the exception of California, Clam) neither is the bar exam. However, two pieces of paper do not a lawyer make. Maybe this kid should look to another line of work. He is certainly still young enough to do so. He could follow the example of Brian Leiter who tried practicing law in New York for a year and then switched over to philosophy.

  3. Charles Barkley said it best when he characterized such people as “one of those smart guys who’s a dumbass.”

  4. Apparently being the youngest person ever to have been graduated from Harvard Law School meant that he hadn’t grown up yet.

  5. This incident occurred more than a year and a half ago (May 2004), yet folks want to keep on coming back to it. Camara is clearly an off-the-charts genius who was more an idiot-savant in this one instance. Having said that, why don’t the real adults in this discussion act their age, acknowledge that this young man has some maturing to do and has no doubt learned from the experience, and get on with more important matters?

  6. It’s my understanding that the Yale Law Journal only recently concluded that they were not, in fact, going to punish him.

That, combined with the fact that I hadn’t heard about it until today, makes it worth posting about.

And that kid’s still a moron. God damn, if you’re going to upload your outline, and are aware enough to put in a disclaimer about it being racist, for fuck’s sake edit the thing.

  7. Yes, the YLS seems to be a bit in hysterics right now. La Zapatotista feels that some of this hysteria is reasonable, given the crazy K.A.D.’s antics and Yale Law Journal’s poor handling of the situation.

But La Zapatotista can see how much of this seems like simply hysteria from outside the halls of the YLS. One cannot accuse the students here of lacking passion! See what La Zapatotista means here:

  8. All right, should you believe what you read on the internet or is it only entertainment? According to volokh, the offensive remark was posted when the kid was 17 during his first year of law school about 4 years ago and not after he had graduated. Which, if true, makes this post a non-story and me a big jackass for the earlier comment I made. What 17-year old won’t do or say stupid things?

  9. That’s the point, though, nk.

This kid did something utterly retarded- posted, without redaction, an outline that he was aware had “racially offensive” language in it. That’s pretty dumb.

Like I pointed out, though, the “OMG! WE HAVE TO KILL TEH ARTICAL!!!!1one” push was also incredibly retarded. And that didn’t come from some 17 year old.

Thus the “you pick which ones!” portion.

  10. This is more evidence that intelligence is not synonymous with morality. Nietzsche was an outstanding genius (IMO), but he had some moral lapses as well.

BTW, lighten up Macbee – we aren’t allowed to have any fun on Clam’s site?

  11. I don’t even know if it was immoral, as it was a generic reference in what was (until he uploaded it) a private document.

If someone refers to black people as “niggers” in their internal dialogue, but never once says it, is that immoral?

I’d say so, but only because racism itself is immoral. Some could reasonably disagree, I think. Then it would only be immoral if the statement were calculated to (or, at the very least, made with the disregard for the possiblity of) harm/upset/whatever a listener. In the context of formerly private papers, that may not be the case.

But, and I think that anyone can agree to this, it is utterly fucking retarded that he did that.

  12. That goes directly to what I see as the central mystery here. When exactly did racism become immoral? Our parents and grandparents never heard of such a law. There’s nothing in the Bible or any other moral code to support it. Suddenly, just as we’ve thrown overboard every traditional notion of morality, we’ve gone and invented new ones, with no basis at all! Why exactly is believing that blacks are stupid worse than believing that the earth is flat? Why is saying “nigger” worse than farting in public? People are offended by it? A lot more people are offended by homosexuality than by racism, but we no longer see gay people hiding in shame, and indeed anyone who thinks that they ought to is now the new pariah. Explain it, please. Racism is stupid and gauche, but how did it become wrong?
