To Achieve Peace, Sometimes You Must Prepare to Drop Some Bombs — Google-Bombs, That Is

Filed under: Humor — Patterico @ 7:06 pm

Little Miss Attila has a great idea: help Patterico get a Nobel Peace Prize by portraying Patterico as a man of peace. And the best way to do that is to Google-bomb the term Patterico so that it leads back to the “Peace” page at the Nobel Foundation — like this: Patterico.

I’m Patterico, and I approved this message.

  1. Patterico, I think you should or could stop this.

If your objective is to show how baseless the nominations are, the candidates you mentioned, you should investigate why they were nominated and whether the nomination was withdrawn, accepted and successfully or not and why. For example if you cite Hitler, see who nominated him, when he was nominated and why. What were the historical circumstances at and preceding nomination. It was before WWII and the Munich Agreement had been signed and there was hope for peace. I guess the Norwegian legislator who nominated Hitler, hoped, it would bring peace and when he realized it was not to be, withdrew his nomination.

If your objective is to diligently investigate the manner of nomination, you would start with the web site rules : “Can I nominate someone for the Nobel Prize?” http://nobelprize.org/nomination_facts.html

Answer: No, you cannot if you’re not invited. Qualifications to nominate candidates vary somewhat among the different Nobel Prizes. To find out who has the right to submit proposals for an award, see information for each prize category:

The process of selecting a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize starts in September, about a year before the prize announcement. At this time, the prize-awarder in Oslo, the Norwegian Nobel Committee, composed of five members selected by the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) sends out letters to individuals and organizations qualified to nominate candidates. (Nominators ») [http://nobelprize.org/peace/nomination/nominators.html ]

The nominations reach the Nobel Committee between September and February. In recent years, the Committee has received well over 140 nominations. Like the other prizes, the number of candidates is usually fewer than the number of nominations submitted since the same names are usually proposed.

If you are not happy with the rules set for nomination, you could examine Nobel’s Will and the Foundation that was set up to administer it, and see if there is a legal issue that you can take them to court in the right forum, so that, you can interpret the rules as you think it is to be interpreted.

The rules as they appear to me, suggest that, unless invited, the “qualified” proposer cannot nominate.

The rules as you interpret are as long as the proposer falls within the category of qualified proposers, they can nominate, whether they are invited or not.

Why do that when I could just murder someone, get myself on Death Row, and have academics lining up for the chance to nominate me?

I think you’re taking this all too seriously, Yi-Ling — though I do appreciate the research on the nomination rules and will look into it. Your links cast some doubt on Eugene Volokh’s interpretation; if the right to nominate is indeed by invitation only, it’s more limited than I had been led to believe.

  3. Pace, Patterico

Something seems to have snapped in Patterico’s brain. In his mad desire to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, just to make the point that any yotz can “achieve” such an honor, Patterico now wants people to “Google-bomb” his…

  4. I think you’re going about it wrong. In order to win a Nobel Peace Prize these days you either have to kill Jews, approve rigged elections (as long as the correct side did the rigging) or bash the Bushco/neo-connish take-over of Amerikkka.

    Good luck though.

  5. […] Blogger Patterico wants to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and he thinks a Google bomb is just the thing to help his cause. If you have a blog and want to assist, post this code: <a href=”http://nobelprize.org/peace/nobelpeacecenter/index.html”>Patterico</a&gt; Previous Link it up! […]

  6. Don’t you have this the wrong way around? The text of the link should be “Nobel Peace Prize”, and the href should point here. If enough people do that, then when someone searches for “Nobel Peace Prize”, your page will come up. Your way, if someone googles “Patterico” the Nobel committee page will come up, which doesn’t seem to be very useful.

  7. I think you’re right. Dafydd ab Hugh did it both ways.
