Baggage Claim Etiquette

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 4:19 pm

For God’s sake, people: don’t stand right by the conveyor belt. Stand 7-8 feet back. That way we can all see whether our bags are coming — and I won’t have to kneecap you when I take my heavy bag off the belt.

It’s just common sense. Yet 99 percent of people don’t do it.

  1. Well, it’s a good idea…but at most airports if you do have the courtesy to stay back you won’t be able to get past the wall of blockers when your bag does come up.

And then there is San Jose…where it can take over an hour for the first bag to appear, and where they have a chronic problem getting the flight numbers matched to the carousel….

Actually, I think it’s a variant on the Free Rider problem: there isn’t a single, particular person whose actions you must anticipate but an amorphous crowd of people… if you don’t ride for free (stand near the carousel), you will end up subsizing those who do (you won’t be able to get your bag).

  7. Geek, Esq. is right. It is the tragedy of the commons. But you’re living a pretty charmed life if that’s the biggest tragedy in your life.

  8. I’ve often wondered why the airlines don’t post signs, telling people to stand back until their bags come by. It might help.
